Front plate debacle

I removed the front plate holder today because it looks silly. They used self tapping screws through the front of the car :o . What the hell were they thinking? I put back the screws just to cover the holes and waxed the front. I can't fathom why one would install the plate holder that way! Also installed the Bav auto wind restricter, well made and a since to install.

Hint: they ship with a ton of packing paper which is approx 24"x 10' and this makes a perfect tape off paper for treating the top....

Had the same issue with our Z4 - picked it up last November and the horrid self-tapping screws were right through the bumper! The bumper plugs pricing was a little tough to swallow, but in the end we got the plugs for keyholes as well as four plugs for the bumper. Here is one pic to show you how easily they blend into the finish.

looks good!!

yes, i agree, stupid design!!

i used another product to put mine on, can't remember who makes it. Skene? Scene? or something like that

basically it uses a couple of aluminum arms to hold the plate, attaches to the bottom of the middle section of the bumper, therefore cannot see the holes. works great.

it was like $80 i think

Eagle GTs?

Thanks! They are just the OEM runflats...can't wait to replace them with something a little more forgiving. Less than 30k on them though so it'll be a while longer.

I can't argue with the ugly looks of the front plate. If the fine wasn't so high for not having it where I live ($507), it would never be on my car. As an aside, several years back when I owned a Mazda RX-7 (Generation III) I heard on the local news about a new state law that was to go into effect in three days time raising the fine for no front plate from $50 to $507. Wow! So, the next day I was in line at the local DMV to replace the front plate I had thrown away surrounded by Corvette and Porsche owners who had also thrown away their front plates. Long story short, balance the looks against the possible fine.

Wasn't there a company that made a front license bracket that screwed into the hole the towing eyelet fits into?

Local cop told me to just have the plate with you and no problems. It's under the seat. I drove 2 1/2 years w/o on on my last car and never had an issue.

That looks really odd :?

It's either no front plate or central front plate for me.

May look odd, but no holes. Of course, the plates here stateside are taller and not nearly as wide as in Europe.

Since I ordered my coupe from the factory I asked the dealer to make sure they did NOT prep for the front plate and they complied. I have been driving cars like this in SW WA for 4 years now and have never been questioned at all. I run the computer networks for the local county sheriffs dept and the city police and have never even heard a comment from the LE folks when I am talking with them in front of their precinct buildings with my car right in their faces.

FWIW the average patrol type out in their cruisers has no clue about my role in IT for the local gov't agencies so that doesn't play a part in my not getting yanked over out on the streets.

I am in the same position when we move to Denver later this year. Euro license plates at least look good on our cars... the bumpers were not designed with American style license plates in mind. I will be getting one of those offset license plate holders from gominigo.com soon.
