Front brake pads (& 7mm hex tool)

I'm due to change the fronts for the MOT next month and am happy to stick to OEM pads, I've seen a set of apparent OEM fronts for £24 from bmwpartstore but it seems too cheap?
They don't specify model beyond E85 but I assume there are different sizes of OEM pad on the range?

Any idea on the usual cost or best place for a discount, I've seen Sopers mentioned before.

Thanks I'll give them a call, I also see Eurocarparts have a healthy range including Pagid, ATE, Eicher (don't know them) and Textar who I think were the OEM supplier in the past. I'll see how they compare :)
 
I'd suggest changing to ceramic pads personally. Ceramic pads are very low dust, and don't require much cleaning. The oem pads coat the wheels in black powder after only a few days :headbang:
 
First up Jamie at Sopers will give 15% discount and free delivery on pads/sensors but no free del on discs.
Prices for my E85 2003 2.5SE inc VAT being F/pads £67.12, F/discs £122.40, F/Sensor £14.28
By comparison Eurocarparts for example offer Pagid or Textar pads at £29 and £36 respectively they have other makes but I know both these are or have been OEM suppliers to BMW.
They also list Textar’s new epad at about £60 which is supposed to be the new thing in low dust pads.
F/discs from Euro’ are showing at £30 for Pagid or £34 Textar.

I was thinking of using BMW but unless someone has some adverse experience to convince me otherwise it looks like might take the std Textar pads and a set of discs although mine don’t strictly need replacing at that price it seems daft not to. Any thoughts?

I’ve done a bit of engineering geekery and found a nice piece from a ‘brake expert’ on the MG75 & ZT forum which is interesting if you are sad like me, an excerpt of which is relevant, *edit - I've just spoted the expert is from Pagid so a pinch of salt is required - but it's still interesting
Q3) With so many options in the market regarding brake pads, how do we know what product is best suited to our car? I rang a parts retailer to buy some new brake pads and discs for the front. He gave me 3 separate prices with approx £45 difference between the three. So, what would be the difference between the cheapest ones and the more expensive ones? Surely they go through the same tests and are all of the same standard, else they would be allowed to be fitted to a vehicle.

All brake pads sold within the EU must conform to the R90 regulation. As brakes are a safety critical component, this legislation was introduced to protect the end user from inefficient braking performance.

The benchmark for these tests is based upon the original equipment (OE) from the original vehicle manufacturer. These tests have a tolerance of +/- 15% of the OE to pass these tests. What you tend to find is that some of the budget brands will be closer to the 15% tolerance and OE quality pads such as Pagid will be closer to the 0% set by the OE.
Pagid and Textar as OE manufacturers actually do additional tests to the R90 requirements to ensure that their product goes beyond normal requirements.

The different brands are offered to the customer’s requirements. There are people who are price sensitive and they would tend to opt for a budget brand such as Eicher, but they are not compromising on safety if these are purchased. Other people would prefer to purchase quality brake pads such as Pagid with OE pedigree. Then there are the people who require premium brake pads – these are brands such as Textar who have all the same accessories as the OE but at a cheaper price than OE. Hence the big difference in prices between the brands.

Having scanned some guides they mention the required 7mm hex socket for the caliper bolts can be tricky to get in to place, before I buy one does it need to be any particular length for the front caliper (or even rears when I come to do them)?
 
No, I use one which I can put on my wrench but a normal one that you get from an Ikea build-your-own wardrobe will do as well as that is what I used for my X5 :D

Just a heads up on a 25% brakes discount from eurocarparts.com

I've just ordered a front pair of Textar Discs, normally £66 pair and the new Textar low dust e-pads (so called ceramic type), normally £62 a set and a 7mm hex brake tool. But with the 25% on-line discount makes it £100 all in and delivered, which I reckon is a good deal :thumbsup:

Pagid discs and standard Pagid pads would come in at £90 delivered. F/Wear sensors are £10.50 (down from £14) if you need one.

I got Mintex pads from LK Performance in Clekheaton, Bradford for £15 for fronts (£17 rear) and I'm pleased with the performance.....low dust too :D

All done, dusted and bedded in. I fitted Textar discs and the new Textar ceramic type epads and am finding the initial bite at least as good as OE kit, with much smoother and firmer feel under sustained breaking from speed. Silent and with very low dust compared to OE all in all I'm very impressed :thumbsup:

It's on a QuickTime player so you will need to click to install the QuickTime plug-in if you have not already got it (It's a useful Apple produced player), The clip was tested and is working fine in IE7+, Google Chrome, FireFox and Apple Smart phones/tabs, what browser are you on?
I've also got a link to a shockwave version hosted on photobucket if you can't run QuickTime, let me know if you are having problems with it so I can sort any bugs, Cheers :)
