Friends want's Zed......wanted advice.

Friend/customer saw a Zed, wanted advice whether to buy........asked if they are reliable :)

Bit like like asking, i'm going to marry this girl....what do you think....when you know her history..

Well i said if you are into DIY fixing be OK.
If not walk away..

Ha!
People round here seem to say yeah it doesn't matter how reliable it is, get one then keep taking it to Martin.

To be honest, though, Bob, yours is the most unreliable one on the planet from what I've read.

We have had two E89s for a total of three years and two £16.00 microswitches are all I spent on them both in that time apart from normal consumables.

BMWs are known for their "interesting" quirks. All Z4s—both E85 and E89—are known quantities. We know what typically fails and needs to be replaced, like water pumps. Each model has a list of components that will always need attention. If there’s no serious rust and no suspicious error codes (unless the seller decided to erase them), then make sure your available budget includes room for preemptive fixes. Or better yet, take it to a mechanic you trust—though I know, those are rare to find.

Had my car now 13 years, so obviously not had yours long enough for faults to develop like my daily driver.

I've run E86s for almost 11 years, albeit not as dailies, but not had too many unexpected issues in the 40+K I've put on them.

First needed a new water pump at 60K.

Second needed replacement rear brake pipes at 84K and an A/C condensor at 90K.

Current one needed a new cam-chain tensioner at 82K.

All three were registered in December 2006 so I don't think they are any less reliable than any other car of that age.

I've also run a 1 Series and four 3 Series as dailies and they've been equally good over the 150+K miles I've done in them. :)

It sounds like you have been very unlucky with your Z4. :(
