Freelander 2.5 V6 Overheating??

Hi

I've got two Freelanders (as well as waiting for my new zed to arrive!) and have got a problem with the older one.

Bought it just recently it's 2001 reg but only has 11900 miles on the clock - genuine! (It came from the Isle of Man) Its a 2.5 V6.

When we got it home, a distance of about 100 miles there was a lot of steam coming out the bonnet and there was bubbling and gurgling from the coolant system. (Temp gauge steady in the middle)

It's been to the garage to get looked at and they have Pressure tested it, checked for a coolant leak, fitted a new header tank, cap and changed/topped up the antifreeze.

Driven it home (about 22 miles) (temperature gauge in car reads spot on) and as we pulled on the drive and got out - with the engine still running - the radiator fans were running like mad.

Turned off the engine and the fans stopped for a few seconds then kicked back in again for a good few minutes then stopped.

Question is, is this normal on this engine? Given it is freezing cold outside is it normal for the fans to be blasting away?

I really, really would like some advice as we've got 3 months warranty and want it sorted if there is a problem/potential problem.

Thank you so much!

I find the LR4x4.com forum very helpful, just had a look there seems to be a few posts on V6 overheating not all head gasket related as you may think or suspect.

The Rover V6 is a traditional British V motor, all very nice but prone to overheating problems. It could be that the fan sensors are malfunctioning, or correctly reading localised heating due to air in the system stopping circulation/cooling. Once the header and cap are eliminated as a cause of letting air in and water out, the thermostat function is worth checking, as well as leaks from hoses and heater matrix. Truth is the V6 head gaskets are a notorious problem, garages can check for combustion gasses in the header tank, unfortunately overheating caused by other problems can in turn lead to blown head gaskets. Even worse once head gaskets go on the V6 it often causes problems with the piston liners and engines need replacing.

That's the worrying news, if you are lucky it's simply a problem of the system not being properly bled after the replacement tank was fitted leaving air locks, there is sequence (and an an art) to bleeding the V6. Whatever happens make sure it's sorted under warranty, good luck.

This guy has had the same problem.

Thanks guys.

I posted this on the Landrover forum and just got some guy telling me I was an idiot for buying a V6. Came and posted here because I knew you guys would be more helpful and I was right!

Think we'll check all the hoses are getting hot tomorrow, hopefully that will rule out thermostat problems then take it from there trying things step by step until we find if there is a problem somewhere.

Got a bad feeling about this!!!

Lol freelander ownership
