For Sale: 2006 BMW 535d M-Sport Touring

We're thinking of selling my wifes car, its a 2006 BMW M-Sport Estate/Touring. Its the highly rated and very powerful 535d. (3 litre twin turbo) Standard they are 286bhp, a simple £300 remap can up this to 350bhp and something like 700 torque! In the M-Sport guise this is the most sort after of the range (do not confuse it with the lesser Sport and SE models that command significantly less)

It has just gone over 100k miles, has full service history and is in good condition. It does have a scrape on the front bumper but we will get that sorted before the sale.

It has the sort after widescreen Sat Nav, full leather, heated / electric seats with memory, bi-xenon self levelling headlights, dual zone climate control, cruise control etc etc. Basically its got a lot of options.

The colour combination is arguably the most desireable; Carbon Metallic Black with black leather. It has the 18" M-Sport alloys. We have replaced all the run flats with proper tyres (most do this as it signficantly improves the ride)

I also had a very expensive Tow Bar system fitted, with the proper dedicated electrics. When a trailer is connected it disables the rear parking sensors, the rear suspension self levels (its on air) and it has some fancy stability control to prevent snaking (you can tow in triple figures! Not that you would of course!) I had this fitted to tow the FD, I took it to one event, the gearbox on the FD went and my FD never saw a track again. So the tow bar has been used for less than 200miles!

This would make the ultimate tow car and/or family car. It towed the FD like it wasn't even there, so much better than my Navara or Delica. But in luxury :) And if you have kids, dogs or just loads of stuff to cart around its ideal as you can fit so much in there. The rear has factory fit privacy glass all round so again great for protecting kids from the sun/heat and from a security point of view. The boot also has the slide over cover.

Price wise we're asking £9500

May consider a p/x if its a sub £2k diesel estate or some cutesy car that my wife would like :D

Cracking motor! I wish I had gone for one of these instead of the totally gutless 520d tourer I had, it's looks a great example :)

On a run we'll see 42-45mpg. If I get in the car after the missus has been using it just to do short trips to and from the Gym, the shops etc it says it's averaging about 35. I would say thats a good guide on mixed driving.

That's pretty impressive. I'd been told to expect high 20s at best.

Not sure by who but that is very inaccurate. I used to get that on my M3!! On the 5 Series forum sometimes people report bad MPG, quoting low 30's. 99/100 it's just the thermostats need changing. Its a common issue where when faulty they stick open and the car takes a long time to warm up, on colds days never reaching operating temp. Initially our mpg wasn't great (low 30's) so we had both thermstats changed and now its as expected.

My uncle has one he struggled to get 35 out of his. They are thirsty

Same with ours when we first bought it. My friend has the 530d and he was getting high 40's on a run. I knew I expected ours to be worse but not that much. Did research, changed the thermostats and it improved massively. Most dealers aren't aware of this issue :headbang:

interested mmmmm, how many owners?
How long have you owned it.
Also How many stamps a service history break down would be good. Along with work you have carried out on the car.
Also any advisories on the last mot ...
I assume Hpi clear?
Full condition overview inside/out...
Can you send some decent pictures, as those look like library or infact the ones when you purchased the car

Feel free to pm :)

I'll get all the info together along with some more pictures asap. The missus is in London with the car until Friday evening so realistically it's not going to be until the weekend :|

Impressive MPG figures on the big 5 ,
got shut of our 520d sport tourer as it was woefully underpowered ( 177LCI ) & town driving was 26/28mpg with all-time best on a 450 mile run a paltry 44 mpg , a figure i managed in our 330d after just 25miles motorway driving it home :?

I average 43mpg out of mine, and don't hang about. I recently got 47mpg on a run over to Norfolk. Would recommend this as a practical yet exciting car.

Just one comment though, surely a 2006 model is pre-LCI, and therefore standard at 272HP, not the later 286?

That's very poor on a 520d!!! That must of had a problem, either that or you have a lead right foot. The thermostat issue isn't really known by much of the dealer network, seems to be just discussed on the forums? No doubt BMW not wanting to admitt to a common problem on all these cars! If you access the hidden menu and display the water temp, you can see very clearly when you have a problem. The car should run at over 90 degrees. When you have a thermostat problem the temp takes a very long time to get anywhere near that and in a lot of cases never does. Therefore the car is running on 'cold start' and chucking more fuel in, hence the poor figures. The thermostats are rubbish, its a case of when not if. I've heard a figure of 50k miles being thrown around but not sure how accurate that is. I would say most of the 5 series diesels out there that have done over 50k miles need the thermostat/s replacing, so will not be returning their optimum MPG. As the water temp is hidden, no one knows they have a problem, dealers don't won't admit to it so unless you really keep an eye on your MPG most don't realise there is a problem, particularly as most people buy them already with the problem. But as mentioned we've had ours both replaced (there are two, EGR and the main one)

Anyway I will happily show any viewer of the car the MPG this gets. Just a case of resetting the computer and taking it for a run. I'd guarantee it'll be showing over 40mpg after a steady run, around 35mpg of some mixed driving.
