Here's a quick issue and diagnosis for the forum records. 2003 Z4 2.5i Auto.
Issue - on moving key to second ignition notch (i.e. electrics on, engine not yet turned over), a loud flapping noise can be heard from somewhere to the left of the cabin. Perhaps 5 or 6 times before stopping.

The issue doesn't repeat until the car has been standing for more than an hour unused (apparently the car goes into standby after this time, all flaps close, etc).
Diagnosis - Dealer took off the glove box and noted that an actuator on the heater box that pushes an air flap was incorrectly seated. Reseated it but noted if it broke a new heater box would be required (a circa $2k job in Australia). No charge for the diagnosis and reseating (big kudos to BMW Melbourne).
Comments welcome, but thread more for posterity in case anyone suffers similar in the future.
