Fitting water temp sender

as I'm installing a couple of gauges i thought i would put some pics of the install up, forum has been very helpfull so i thought i would put something back for others

its not easy to see what your doing on this engine and it took a while to locate the plug, i found removing the aloy heat sheild from over the exhaust allowed a good view of the plug and more room fro the socket, you need to remove three M8 (13mm socket) and one M6 (10mm socket) to take the shield off, its a bit tight and you have to push and pull some of the other shields but it will come off.
ones its off you get a good view of the plug and you need a 13mm socket on a 6 inch extension to remove it, if you have the sensor ready and close at hand you can fit it back quickly without loosing too much coolant.

i assembled the sender unit into an adapter to take the 1/8 npt sender to M14 x 1.5 and used a 19mm 5 1/2 inch box spanner to put it back this allowed the wires to sit inside the box spanner

Since the sender unit is so close to the header, how will it effect its overall functionality? Will the header cause any issues to the sender unit or it's wiring?
 
For this I would use the drain plug for the rad.... These sensitive sensors won't survive manifold heat. Awesome effort op, I love that your getting stuck in and working this out for yourself., but I do feel you may regret that particular sensor location, not to mention the ambient temp in that location will be far hotter than the water, you will most likely see strange readings from here.
 
If you look on the other post "gauge sender units" this is the position I'm told to use, if I fit it to the rad it will only tell me the rad water temp, what if the thermostat sticks shut? I could boil the engine and the rad will be nice and cool
I will monitor the situation once all wired in and if needed add some heat shield

hmmm interesting...... thats where the car takes water temp, which btw is accessible on the OBC under a secret menu. Anyhow good luck with this all, look forward to the results.

It shouldn't be an issue.
This location has been used by several others, including Ron Stygar.
It might not be a bad idea to add a heat shield though...
