Fitting door speakers

Hi
Just wondered if anyone knows why the speakers are not working, I have just purchased a pair of door speakers for my Z4 2003 3.0. The cable was in place so I was taking it for granted that they would work. The car only had the 6-speaker system in place, but all the wires for the additional speakers! Are they not connected? If so is it possible to connect them to the stereo? Thanks David
 
IIRC CJ10jeeper fitted some after market speakers in his door. i was reading the thread the other day thinking about doing it myself.

But i cant find the thread to see if there is anything of help in it.......... try a PM
 
Thanks for the info mate found the answer on a thread. Just connected the speaker to the tweater by the mirror! sounds great! Cheers

That's what I did. Went to a decent audio shop who advised me to do it that way given the overall system quality. Modified the BMW 3 point mount to accept standard speakers and made my own small harness to the mirror tweaters. Purchased a pair of good speakers

Worked fine for a couple of years, but I guess it's no Carver system :D

How does this work as wont the speaker you fit in the door be full range with a mid in the footwell and tweeter in the mirror, or does the speaker you add only get the same signal as the tweeter?

When I fitted mine I was told the standard system was just sending a full signal to each of the types of speaker and therefore it was adequate to simply split the feed to the tweeter and power up some door speakers from them. 2 years later I still have no complaints about the sound (just the choice of music).

Equally I have no doubt ICE experts will throw their arms up in horror and think I should have replaced the head unit, put some amp in somewhere, laid 5kg of copper wire and a yellow top battery, and so on, but my mod costs me the price of a pair of speakers and a metre of twin core :)
 
C.J what were the size of the speakers that you fit in the door's, i have found a post the tells me they
are 10cm but i do not know the deth, and also what wattage did you use

Can't recall but remember standard BMW door speakers are 3 point fixing so you need to do some modding in any event.
 
Hi there.

The mid's are 10cm and have a staggered three bolt fixing arrangement. by staggered I mean that one of the fixings is closer to one than the other - hope that is easy to understand? :? - sorry no photos to hand but do have some.

It is also correct that the 6 speaker system's audio signal is split by the tweeter itself, not the harness or head unit. This is of course different on the carver/10 speaker system, where the amp actively filters the signals to each speaker.
Therefore on a 6 speaker system you can use the tweeter feed to power a mid range 10cm speaker.

Depth wise (IIRC), you should be looking at a max depth of 5cm before you encounter problems.

Remember too make good any changes you make to the water shield that is stuck to the door inner (large grey moulded foam shield that prevents water from penetrating the interior from the door cavity).

I've just upgraded the audio in my Zed from the standard six speaker system. I installed a JBL 75.2 amp and SPL Dynamics SD-6.2 speakers in the stock footwell and tweeter positions.

When I removed the standard speakers it did look to me as if there was some sort of in line resistor/crossover on the feed for the tweeter at the point where it branches off the footwell speaker cable connector.

damn :(

just had my door card off to fit the speaker I got off fleabay, no wiring for them, so Im stumped... any clues?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm in the middle of doing the exact same update (although I have bought a pair of the BMW factory speakers for the door, partly because they fit without modification, and partly because they were specifically designed to utilise the resonance volume of the doors).

My question is how do you ensure that you wire the door speakers in phase with the other 6 speakers in the system, and not out of phase? There are 2 terminals on the back of the BMW speakers, but no + and - (or any other) markings whatsoever. Neither are there any markings on the mirror tweeters that I'm taking the feed from. The wires to the tweeters are identified by different coloured stripes, but the wiring diagrams don't say which wire is which (and even if they did, the lack of markings on the new door speakers wouldn't let me know which way round to connect them).

Help!

'Don't know' is the answer from me. The audio shop who sold me the speakers told me which wire to which speaker terminal and I did as told. I know nothing much about audio compared to many on here, but the end result works really well.
 
You can test a footwell speaker by hooking it up to an AA battery and then make sure the drivers in the door speakers move in the same way for a given polarity. Don't apply DC to a speaker for long - just a quick tap on one of the terminals should be enough. Also, disconnect the footwell speaker from its wiring loom before testing.
