First track day booked! Videoing suggestions?

So I've had my Z4 for only a few weeks and will be going to Rockingham in July for a track day. Really looking forward to it.

Now I know some circuits frown upon people videoing their laps but I was wondering what people have used in the past to either mount inside the car safely or on the bumper they they will allow to use?

Some sort of cheap go pro with a mount would be ideal! :)

Thanks in advance, Neal.

Neal,

I did my first track day last year and absolutly loved it, i had a GOpro mounted inside the car, most tracks dont like external mounts unless its secured with two methonds.

I mounted the go pro between the seats at the top near above the center storage comp and got some amazing footage of the road and both driver and passenger. :)

I Used one of the Stickey mounts that came with the go pro and i have left it in place for my next track outing.

Enjoy yourself

I used my iphone and Harry's Lap Timer App. Allows you to overlay times, g-forces etc into your video.

You will need a suitable mount though, which i believe needs to be screwed down, or to be more clear they won't allow suction cups.

I just wouldn't bother. The video always looks slow and disappointing after you have had an amazing track day. 120mph looks about 30mph.!!

I disagree, plus its a memory you can take away and bore the wife and kids with.

Also on Harry's lap timer it has reference points throughout the circuit so you can see where you are losing time on certain laps so you can look to improve next time round.

As a first timer I would strongly recommend against using any kind of lap timer, some tracks on certain days will also forbid it due to insurance reasons.

Concentrate on technique, finding your comfortable limits, ideal lines through corners etc. Chasing down lap times for the inexperienced has more chance of you pushing beyond your limits by just adding speed down the straights rather than making the important time up through good cornering/braking, and as a first timer you'll learn bugger all from timing yourself anyway. At worst you'll end up pushing too hard trying to make up those elusive seconds and end up in the barriers or someone else's car. Take it easy and enjoy yourself for the first few times, lap times will come when you gain more experience and expand your limits.

Fair point and totally agree. Still a nifty tool though for novelty overlays and can be integrated with your phone, so only £11 worth of app spend versus £100 or so for a camera and mount.
