First Month Ownership

I thought after I had my first full month of Z4 ownership, I would put up my thoughts and feelings. What were your first thoughts when you picked up your first?

1st September I picked up my 09 23i with 57k on the clock, not really a huge amount of options and that didn't really bother me. Although the wife has wanted one for herself for a while, I was going to be looking for a new car in a few months anyway so took her (the Z, not the wife) for a test drive, couple of days later, paid the dealer! The pain of having one at the end of the road...

First day I picked her up was sunny and had to get the roof down and what a smile I had. I now fully understood why people with convertibles have such a big smile! I also realised that until now, I had never driven or even been in a convertible with the roof down before so it is a good thing I got on with it!

I know that the 23i is the baby of the range, but to me it is a massive upgrade and beats anything I have driven before. I had an old 2000 Daewoo Lanos prior to the Z, which to be fair we have had for 7 years, did long (500 mile round trips) journeys with no problems, if we had the space we would have kept it. The wife has an 08 318i so I had some experience with BMW's but the Z is completely different to hers.

Driving position is great in the Z, even though it can be a bit of a pain on blind junctions, you get used to it quite quickly I found. Once the engine is warmed up, it loves to rev and just keeps coming even without the sport button on. I do now collect a lot more nectar points and will soon be on first name terms with the cashier, but you buy these cars knowing that, and buying more fuel is fine as long as you enjoy using it. Taking it up to the moors or over the river into Cornwall is great for finding some fun roads, feels right at home on them.

I have clocked up the miles over the last 30 days, over 1,500 already and the only niggle that has come out is a sound from the nearside front wheel. Been to the garage and they think it might be a wheel bearing, but it is too faint to say for definite. Said give it a bit more of a run in and if it's worse, will replace it as it's still under its warranty. They have had the wheel, brakes and all off and can't see anything else so not hugely worried.

I have also experienced something I never have before, tram-lining! I am now becoming more used to this but it takes some getting used to. It is on 17"s with run flats, I am not looking to change the size of the wheels or away from run flats so from reading the forum, it looks like Michelin's are the best to reduce this so will be getting them when it's time to change.

Overall I love the car, walking up to it when leaving the office, or anywhere, it just looks so damn good. You could say I have these feelings due to my limited/poor car history, which may well be true, but that doesn't change the fact I love having this car as my daily.

P.S. I never knew how quickly black cars got dirty....

Welcome to the forum mate, I have red your post and wondering why you don't want to get rid of the run-flats ??!!

If the car is tramlining then just get rid of the RFT asap as it can be dangerous and you are not supposed to get used to tramlining - you will never regret it !!!

The tyre shop I use told me once that some people drive directly to him from BMW stealers with cars who have less than 20 miles on the clock just to ditch the RFT.

My previous ZED was terrible with tram-lining and as soon as I got rid of them it became a completely different car, it was JUST UNBELIEVABLE. Always and still amazes me why BMW recommend them, I am sure they know that once the thread is halfway the tramlining becomes an huge issue - or may be they know something that we don't !

BMW will tell you that you should keep the RFT as the car was designed with the RFT but they will never tell you that they have invested big money in the RFT industry (Bridgestone If remember correctly - I think they own all/part of it )

Everyone in here will tell you to ditch the RFT mate - I don't think anyone in this forum is pro RFT imho.

Thanks for the advice, the vast majority of every post i have read everywhere echos what you say! I think I might be just a bit ott with keeping it as it came from the factory (part of the whippy brigade). The wifes is on rft and doesnt have any issues sith tramlining which also probably lessens my hatred. It isn't terrible, but havent been through much standing water yet. Only really noticed it on dual carriage way or motorway, is fine apart from that.

Will probably make my decision when the tires need replacing, bit strapped for cash atm, depending on how it does with standing water that is

Good to see the bond is strong after just a month but 1500 miles is probably more Z miles than many forum members manage in 12 months :D
Hankook also do runflats , Bridgestone do seem to be very poor in terms of comfort & road feel

Some non-run flats are prone to tramlining. When I got mine it had 3/4 worn Vredstein Ultrac Sessantas on the front and it felt that it was determined to hurl me into the nearest ditch. Once I changed to Goodyear F1 Eagle Assymetrics the car transformed.

Don't talk to me about black cars. They are a form of addiction. In the last 20 years all of the cars owned by me and Mrs R have been black. :o But they do look good when they're clean, :)

Nice to hear your thoughts on your first month OP!

I also kept turning round to look at mine - and still do!

Having Coupe I have no experience of roof down motoring, but I hadn't had a 2-seater before and the Z4 just feels so special every time I use it. (Plus the engine is fantastic).

I only have limited experience of RFTs, but so far the tramlining seems to be a slightly random affliction. My first Coupe had Bridgestones with 5+mm of tread, but tramlined worse than my current one that has Bridgestones with 3 to 4mm of tread.

Before I saw the light I had a 123d that went through 3 sets of Pirelli RFTs, and that only ever tramlined if the tyre pressures were low or the tread was below 3mm.

When I need new tyres I will definitely avoid Bridgestones, but have yet to decide on whether to have a different brand of RFTs or switch to non-RFTs. (I do quite like the RFT idea - the 2 punctures I got in the 123d both happened when it was snowing)!

Anyway, keep enjoying your Z4. :driving:

Nice little write up.

Sounds like your discovering all the good and not so perfect things about owning a Zed. Bin the run flats and the latter will reduce down to just one indisputable fact. Black cars are a bugger to keep clean.

I had an E85 and the runflat tyres were dreadful - they were swapped for Vredestein Sessantas and the car was transformed - more compliment ride but less sharp turn in so not a perfect transformation.

The 3.0l E89 came along - M Sport suspension & Bridgestone Runflats - No problem No Tramlining - the rears were replaced by the same rubber.

My new 35is E89 - also has the Bridgestone Run Flats and i don't intend to change those either.

You will find others on here who also find them ok so I'm not a lone voice!
