Finding out about members

I was chatting to a guy the other day who's owned and modded gti's, 306s, mx5s, rx8s, Audi S3s. He now has a Z4 and in his words "I've spent tonnes modding old cars too, but the z4, I don't think needs that really... It's brilliant out the box

That's me :)

I've spent far too much on cars, modding them so much, then getting bored...

I wanted a car that I don't need to mod greatly to have fun, and the Z4 is just that. Also, unlike my previous modded cars it doesn't stand out like a sore thumb everywhere I go (for sometimes unwanted attention)

That said, I will be fitting some springs and spacers to my car in the coming weeks, to give it that stance it should have had from factory.

I would bore people with pictures of my previous cars... But they possibly aren't to manys tastes on here!

Most people here have done some form of mod but as you said these are mostly cosmetic ie lights, kits and wheels etc, that said have a read through this;

That charged Z4 looks beautiful.

And yes I would have liked to come but I'm on track the day before so no doubt I'll need to give my car some TLC and it's a long way for me to go for a chat and a ride :(

i do alot of my own work, more so if i am back at home in somerset with tools and ramp and pit.. if im in london id rather chuck it at a garage as i dont have the time..

Welcome Joe. From what I've seen there are plenty of mechanically minded people on here who don't mind getting their hands dirty. Most of the cars on here now are out of manufacturers warranty so people are happy to tinker.

The trouble is that with something like the 3.0 Z4 you don't get much bang for your buck when modding the engine. Remap, exhaust etc etc will set you back thousands and will still leave you with less power than an ///M. Likewise on the thread that Paddy linked. bmwZ spent a fortune on that car both cosmetically and mechanically, however I believe he would have had more power with an //M (don't quote me on this, can't remember the exact figures in the thread). By his own admission he bought the smaller engine due to some weird tax situation in his country.

Because of the above most people tend to spend on cosmetic, audible (lovely sounding exhausts) and handling upgrades on these cars with a few exceptions. Supercharging gives the only gain worth talking about. You could go down that route and do it yourself as you are clearly very competent. Most people don't because the big worry is that these cars can throw up some very scary bills, especially on the ///M. I bought my wife a Seat Ibiza a few years ago. It's a great wee car, I love driving it, but I know that the whole thing could be replaced for the price of a few parts from an ///M or any other BMW for that matter.

As one of the more famous members here learned recently. Expensive cars still have expensive parts in them even when the over all price has depreciated massively.

Thanks Mowflow, sounds like you've hit the nail on the head, it all makes sense really. I'm with you that a NA engine will take a lot of money to get any noticeable gains forced induction is a lot easier. I miss the responsiveness of the NA engines though :(

The M is just out of my price range unfortunately otherwise I'd jump straight to it. Anyway I think the 3.0i will be a nice introduction to RWD even if it is nearly 200bhp down on my current car.
