So after buying a AK90 from eBay which seemed to work read the EWS and the key showed signs of it copying but no joy. So I thought I'd try my luck again with one from Amazon knowing that it's easy to return if the magic red box is a dud, but to my surprise I'm happy man have cut and coded two keys at a fraction of the price of BMW or Timpson who quoted £300.

That’s great, no such luck here. I couldn’t find any locksmith or automotive locksmith willing to make the dreaded BMW key. Even when I told them it was an 04 model. I had to go the dealer route, cost me around $230-ish if I recall correctly...

I had similar issues, seems to be dependant where you live. Took my keys with me on holiday to Norfolk and got them cut at a branch if timp sons for a donation in their charity box. Two key cut and I put a tenner in their box.

Couldn’t get them cut at home for love nor money.

Which exact one did you buy?

Well you had better luck than me with the AK90, mine was via ebay, reads keys fine but intermittant when reading the ews module, getting a good connection on the chip on the board was a pain even though the contacts were all cleaned. No matter how many times I tried I couldn't get a key coded to crank the engine. Finally had a mobile locksmith do it with his all singing dancing machine. He read the ews by probing the eeprom chip on the board as opposed to the one the AK90 uses. He coded to a key slot that was already in use but I didn't have the key for, it wouldn't code to any of the unused slots.
