Faulty oil level sensor?

Hi guys!
Recently I got a Z4, 2.5l 23i, e89 2009.
When I got it, the oil level on the dashboard was at the max dash. Yesterday it got an oil and filter changed, the mechanic put 6.5 liters. The oil indicator is still at max.
I found mixed results about oil capacity 7.5l or 6.5 l of oil.
Does anyone know how to test oil sensor? I suspect it is defective as always showing at the max.
Please advise.

Thank you!

All of my previous 6 pot BMW’s have taken 6.5l of oil when servicing. Not one of them used a drop of oil between servicing so I would not be too concerned. If it is showing max, then it most probably is. The difference between min and max on the display is approx 1L of oil.

Also I am sure there is a back up sensor in case the main one fails.

I wouldn’t worry too much and enjoy the car.

Drive it until your oil sensor is giving a readin then park it on a steep hill nose downwards, steepest you can find, and leave it for half an hour. When you return all the oil will have run to the front of the engine and you will get a low oil warning when you start it. Had this happen to me, half hour later all was well again.

Mine did the same, use to have to get it on the flat turn it off and restart. No problem since I park it in the garage now.

It's seems I got a bad oil level sensor after all.
I tried keeping the car on a slop and after 30 min, still at max.
Something is wrong with the sensor or with the wiring. I must investigate.
Does someone have the wiring diagram or the e89?

It sounds like you’re looking for a fault that isn’t there, the mechanic put in 6.5l of oil which is correct & it should read full which it’s doing. :?

I tend to agree with Smarbear..I think you are overthinking the issue and not letting enough time/mileage go by..

My E89 and SWMBO F56 have this system and it can be a bit quirky especially after a service...

If you know for a fact that 6.5 litres of oil was put in then it has enough oil in it..it’s not like it’s empty..

Suggest you drive it round a bit..on one of my prior services the oil level never varied from max for the whole year including some serious hooning..

AFAIK the 23i is not an oil burner so it’s plausible that the oil level may not move much ..

Agreed - I don't think there is a problem with the OPs car.

Even with a leaking oil filter housing my 3 Series with the same N52 engine did over 3,000 miles before it needed a 500ml top-up! (That's 2 markers on the display so probably 1,500 miles before the display showed anything other than full).
