Fantastic BMW Independent Specialists

Hi Forum

I wanted to share this with those that might be able to benefit from my fantastic experience; last Sunday my Z4's roof had its last breath, to my horror I'd been hit by the dreaded roof motor failing!! Having noticed it getting slower and slower since late summer last year I knew it was on the cards; I did my reading up on the forum and worryingly read it wasn't a cheap repair although very common place on the MK1 Z4's. I contacted the guys at a local BMW specialist (Grosvenor in Caversham, Nr Reading); spoke to Peter who'd already resolved a batch of problems having been messed around by another less decent so called specialist and an official BMW dealer. Peter pointed out it was well known problem but one they'd easily and happily resolve; not only that, hearing the concern in my voice, and the fact that I'd read on the Forum and had confirmed by BMW it was going to cost me around £900 minimum, he simply and calmly suggest I popped it down so they can check it was the roof not a fuse or user error etc, and then pointed out if it was the motor, not to panic, they do the entire job for.....................£637.00 all in! I dropped it in this morning; collected their loan 3 series, later just before 5pm I get a call to let me know it's ready and waiting. On arrival not only do I have a very fast roof now; the car was spotless (I mean valet spotless, not that main dealer 5 sec jet wash attempt) and indeed a bill for just £637.00!! While down there I was surrounded by some very nice and very late and earlier examples of some of BMW's finer cars, from my Z4, to a couple of 2007/8 7 series, 3's, 2 2005/7 5's and clearly someone's pride and joy M3, I simply cannot recommend the service and expertise enough.

They are based in Caversham, Nr. Reading in Berkshire, I understand Peter is the owner and their number is 0118 947 3085, they only work on BMW's here but I understand they have another Specialist Garage for that other German sports car brand...............you know the one with rival convertible!!! Really great guys; very welcoming service, great prices and they simply knew their stuff.

If you live in the Berkshire/Oxfordshire area and like me have had enough of the local main BMW dealer; I cannot recommend them enough.

Did I mention; my roof is really quick and quiet now......................so pleased!!

Ha... typical, I work in Caversham and take my car out to Didcot Autos.

Slightly more embarrassing, I've been to these guys quite a lot over the ten years (not for a while) and never knew they were BMW specialists.

Hi PawnSacrifice

I can only say that they are very good; upfront and honest about the work required, if it doesn't need replacing they'll not be telling you it does to make a buck or two, but they'll show you what does and exaplin why so you're happy and clear.

P.S. You're my first spotted Z4 on here; I think you work down Richmand Avenue in the offices at the end (IT something maybe), often look as I drive home to Sulham. How's the Dennison, easy install?

Good guys all round.

Best

Yep, thats me.

Good to hear you had a good experience - I checked with a few people in the office, a few people stopped using them, on had a very bad experience. But that was some time ago, so I won't suggest that is still the same today. They haven't been BMW for very long I don't think, certainly not when we used them.

Personally I think the Dension is great! The thread below cover my thoughts and some details about the install - really very easy. There's some troubleshooting on there too:

If you have nav though I'd be looking at the Intravee solution. Really didn't like the DICE unit at all.

I'll keep an eye out for you.

Good to see some Reading boys on here ;) I used to live in Emmer Green, now I live on the river in the centre of town. Since recently joining the forum I pay extra special attention to other Z4's I see about town. There are two others down in my car park, I should leave a polite note on the windscreen and point them in this direction.

Oil service coming up soon, so I'll check Grosvenor out. I normally take it to Sytner High Wycombe as bro works there. I also saw on another forum a recommendation for Birds in Iver (nr Slough).

Hi PawnSacrifice

I understand that Peter had a problems about two years ago with the old manager that ran the company (non BMW at this time; a problem he soon resolved when he took over, since then it seems to be liked and not short of BMW owners, it's always busy but very tidy!!?? For me it was the general care taken over my car and the fact it came back very well cleaned, like it was their own car.

Hi aRtemis

All I can say is; I really wanted you're spec; T/silver with red leather and with the 108's it's a really nice finish. I ended up with a merlot red/black leather 3.0se and the M spec suspesnion and 108's, the 108's are a nighmate to keep clean and mine need re-furbing; so I cheated and bought a set of 18's Ellipsods (i think that's the spelling) as I love the look of these as well and fancy a change, they are being re-furbed in a slightly darker silver with a high shine finish (£230 all in by a company in Wokingham), so we'll see how these look in a few weeks. The the 108's are going on ebaY - unless I can offer them on here?!

Thanks for the compliment  any pics of your zed?

I was a little bit naive when I bought the car, but got a fair bit off it then dropped it in to get some interior work done (drivers side door handle was badly chipped, coin tray underneath handbrake was covered in un removable marks, drivers side door grabber was in a bit of state and also gear stick was chipped) - what can i say I bought it off a rich woman with a DB9 and M5 in the garage and house off MTV cribs, so i blame the bling for the scratches...Anyway back to the alloys, I noticed when cleaning that the paint was flaking off, so got them dipped baked etc and it makes such a massive difference.

I have thrown my money at the 'stealers' cause my bro can get good discount there so got a good rate for the alloy dip, although I was reminded not to bring them back there as they were a bit of a nightmare apparently ;)

The biggest pain when cleaning 108's is the small bolts round the rims, but the autoglym wheel brush is a worthwhile investment to combat this! Can't say much for the active insect remover though.... :?

Felt compelled to post as my last on the subject wasn't very positive...

Good
Credit where credit's due. Just took my car to Grosvenor, the service was good and the pricing too. Small job - replacing the passenger window - in trying to locate a rattle on Saturday I gave the door a shake and the window shattered. Must have had something touching the glass after taking the door card off. Anyway it took them about an hour to fix, including the glass and the membrane - the bill came in at £260 (inc vat).

Bad
Started the day with the car at Cooper BMW Reading. Dropped it off first thing. They called me an hour or so later with the costs... around £480! :o I managed to get this down to around £350 but it was too big a difference - staff weren't great, although first guy was new and didn't know the system, second guy made too many patronising comments. To be fair to Cooper when I went to collect the car the services manager came out and was very amenable, but as I told him it was too late as I'd asked Grosvenor to order in the parts.
This was nice... bear in mind I'd taken in a car with a shattered window, to be replaced, glass removed from the door and the membrane replaced. One of the chaps wanted to charge £60 for diagnostics to see what needed doing. This was not charged - the service manager said they'd done nothing more than I had. Except... driving back to the office, the airbag light was on  I kept driving.

Summary
Will give Grosvenor another try in the future, hopefully they keep this up! Please :)
Cooper BMW Reading, let down by BMW job timings and a couple duffers. Shame, the service manager was a decent chap but came into play too late.

Bumped into Aero1971 who was collecting his 1 series - too many Z4 issues caused a sale.

PawnSacrifice I am taking my car in for a coolant change and CDV modification on Monday after seeing this and http://forums.m3cutters.co.uk/showthread.php?t=21352 this, will let you know how it goes. Been quoted 59+vat for coolant and CDV they aren't sure of how long it will take.

Cool. Not sure what time you're heading over / how long you'll be around, but if you're here around noon give me a shout - office is about 400 yards down the road. Or otherwise if you just want to know where to grab a coffee while you wait.

Nice one  I will probably be there about 1030, they said they need the car most of the day but have offered a courtesy car. Might do a little light Xmas shopping as well, but will give you a shout if I'm there at lunchtime

Flimper I'm after exactly the same job so let me know if these guys deliver it seems like a great price for that work...

Had my M in to Grosvenor today, had to leave it there overnight as they needed to order a couple of bits to do the job on the bumper. While I was there I spotted flimper's coupe oh and also a tidy imola M coupe sitting in the waiting room :D

Having the CDV done too, thought I might as well while it's in there. Got a 3 series compact loaner for the drive home :D I'll report back tomorrow when I pick up the M but all positive so far.

Had the coolant change and CDV modification done today - £130 all in which I thought was ok. Very impressed with the premises and staff, Pete seemed very knowledgable and passionate about BMWs, as did the other guy there who owns a PY M3.

Was a bit apprehensive driving it at first, the gearbox felt much more notchy and like the Sport button was on (not a bad thing I hear you cry) and after driving a few miles it felt great.

Pete did a free diagnostic for me when I collected the car, no faults, and he switched on audible locking which pleased my small mind. He also mentioned that at the last brake fluid service BMW might not have bled the brakes properly so that might need looking at.

Anyhoo, the upshot of the day was they seemed like decent professional blokes and I wouldn't hesitate in going back. The only negative was the nightmare journey to and from!

P.S. PawnSacrifice, I didn't stay around town but cheers for the offer of meeting up
