Fan blower speed not changing

Hi all,

Today I could not change the fan speed for the internal blower. Only off or minimal flow, unable to increase the speed with each press of the button even though the lights turned on with each progressive press.
There was no difference with air con on or off, or windscreen demist, which usually blasts it, so had to pull in to clear the windscreen by hand.

Any one else had this problem, or any ideas?

Thanks,

robbee

Not on the zed but just bought a Passat for the dogs and only blew in setting 4 turned out it needed a new blower resistor (£12 off the bay)

Sorted it - poss same in the Zed??

As Spicky mentioned, could potentially be the final stage resistor (hedgehog resistor as it gets called due to it's appearance).

It's common on other BMW models such as the E36/E46 3 series. It's notmally located down by the passenger footwell behind the heater control area.

Not saying that it's definitely the issue but something you could look into.. They generally play up to begin with by fluctuating the fan speed intermittently.
Maybes worth a look?

Auto mode gets overridden as soon as you manually change the fan speed though.

The Final Stage Resister failing would have as a symptom battery drain though and the car not shutting down.

Not on the e89 it doesn't and this is in the e89 area. Changing the fan speed while in the auto setting can marginally have some impact but you need to be in manual/non auto mode to get full control over the fan speed. Its a bit like the auto light level on your mobile phone, you can set it where you want it, but it will still go darker or lighter dependent on the sensor.

Strange, the E70 "Auto" light goes off as soon as you change the fan speed.

Bear in mind we're talking a newer climate setup in the e89 which has dual zones etc so its likely changed how that works.

Yes, the E70 LCI system is newer than the E89 so there could be differences.

One possibility is the power management system? Might not be the cause of your issue but an interesting read nonetheless. It seems strange how the LEDS remain active in this state though! :o

Thanks Guys,

I did have the idrive report a "higher battery discharge" message, as I have not been using the car for a few weeks, so that could explain it.

I'll take it for a long drive to charge it up and will report back,

Thanks again,

Thanks Guys,

I took out the battery and charged it, and fan blower is now working perfectly. Power save must have been the cause. It would have been useful for the iDrive system to let you know when its applying such resourcefulness, to save a possible trip to the stealers. would be so easy to program this in!

Thanks again,

If you know anyone with a decent diagnostic system they should be able to give you an indication as to the state of the battery and its performance over the last x days. Did you use a pulse charger (CTEK or similar) to charge the battery, or an old basic 3.99 jobbie?

Used the Ctek on AGM setting.

I don't know anyone with diagnostics system. I've been thinking of getting one - someone suggested a special cable and software for a laptop, though cant find a recommended one for our e89 - Any suggestions?

Thanks,
