Falken tyres

So, why is it that so many people go for Falken tyres? I thought they were a cheap ditchfinder brand, not something you'd put on your Z4... I'm tempted to go for them after the praise on here, but I'm just wondering why people think they are so good, and if anyone has had a bad experience with them.

Expensive brand is not always a good thing..the worst tyres I ever had were Goodyear NCTs.. Traffic cops I knew called them the Non Cornering Tyre. Falkens do the trick for me these days after years of Yokohama and Michelin.

Good question, I'm replacing my run flat tyres and someone has offered me a set of nearly new Falkens, not sure to get them or some Michelin PS2'S?

I researched them spoke to a trusted tyre supplier friend who described them as an amazingly competitive price for a premium quality brand, so went with them. No problems and am generally staying out of the ditches.

At a set of 4 for the price of a pair of RFT's, ample grip and a superior ride to RFT's they suit me fine.

If I ran a track day special or wanted ultimate performance or insisted on RFT's, then I'd have chosed something else.

On what evidence or information do you class/consider them as a cheap ditchfinder brand?

Jeeper, it was when I mentioned them to a friend yesterday, he said "Why would you want ditchfinders on the car?" - Plus, they are a lot cheaper than the well-known brands, so it does make you think they're ditchfinders.

Mr Black, I'm not too interested in wet performance, as I never take the car out when it's wet. Need the best dry performance I can get. Any ideas? Or are Falkens good in the dry, too?

I have Falkens on my 3.0 and think they are great. Wet and Dry conditions - no problems

How many people that have Falkens really push their car? Not to the limits, but a really good drive quite often?

Wish there was a try before you buy option somehow with tyres!

i rate them too.
TVR owners often run them as do many other sports car drivers, mate has them on his Porsche.
912's are ok....452's are better and only slightly more money.

OK - so not really much more than a 'I've never heard of them so they must be bad' No worry - I was just interested if there was something a bit more scientific or a mag review that showed them performing badly.

Before I joined z4-forum I wouldn't have considered Falken tyres either - the opinion of other forums and general views from mates and a local garage were that they were indeed ditchfinders. It shows what rumour and hearsay can do for a brand's reputation: I'll be honest, when I initally heard folk were fitting them to their Z4's I thought "WTF", but after doing my own research I found out it wasn't just Z4 owners who recommended them. Porsche and TVR owners rate them too.

So glad I went for them as they do all I need and as a bonus they're a bloody bargain :D

ETA: if you look on the mytyres.com website, there's links to a website tyretest.com: clicking on that takes you to reviews on the tyre's performance - I think these are owner's reviews. Anyway, 1,126 folk have rated them after having driven a combined >15,000km and they get a good result, see here:

For comparison, the much more expensive Goodyear F1 asymmetrics score slighter better but not by much: http://www.reifendirekt.de/cgi-bin/RDTyreTest.pl?cart_id=73708431.110.10242&language=EN&dsco=110&Marke=Goodyear&Profil=EAGLE+F1+Asymmetric&Med=Reifentest.com

I read an Autocar test of the top branded tyres (not incl Falken to be fair) and Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics came out on top. So that's what I put on. I'd had GSD3s before (their predecessor) on my E46 and was very impressed. Totally pleased with them, and they're getting better with use. Turn in is sharper, ride smoother, slightly more give in bends, car almost feels lower. I'll definitely be getting some for my sensible car.

Maybe I'd have saved £150 on a set by buying Falkens. I don't do high miles so whatever I bought I'd have for a while.

Btw (repeating myself, sorry) if you trade in at a BMW stealer with non run flats they'll 'charge you' for a set of tyres via the trade in price.

I've put them on many different cars that I've owned in the past 10 years. I'm happy to report that none of them ended up in a ditch :D

Well, I've just been reading PH for ages, and not a bad word to say about them!
