Failed Lollypop at speed.

Yesterday while travelling home Vanity at Beaulieu on the m3 I had a pretty hairy brown trouser moment.

With no warning I nearly binned it into the central reservation while doing 70mph. I had just touched the brakes when the car suddenly lunged to the right and made a horrible noise. My first though was my wheel has come off. I had another zedder behind me he said my rear locked up. And was a mass of tyre smoke.

I somehow manage to make it across to the shoulder without being wiped out in the process. Every time I touch the brakes it pulled to the right and I didn’t want to steer too much I case it caused more damage.

After a 3 hour wait for recovery and a 2 hour drive to my home I took a quick vid of the under if the car while it was on the truck.

Both bolts that secure the lollypop to the car were gone. How this has happened I have no idea. It makes me think there may have only been one there to begin with. I did hear a second before something rattle under the car, which I can only presume was the bolt.

Thankfully, I didn’t bin it. The car isn’t too badly damaged. The wheel pushed back in the arch causing wear to the liner and tyre.

30 seconds earlier I was going considerably quicker and 5 mins I was on some twisty roads so it could have been a lot worse!

My dash cam caught it, it seemed a lot worse at the time but you can see how quickly it went.

Fok.... pleased to hear you lived to tell the tale. Likely there was some maintenance & not correctly torqued back up!

Yeah my thoughts exactly. A few trips over cattle grids may have just been the last straw for it.

I can’t thank Neil enough for stopping and waiting with me for 3 hours. He played a defensive role and pulled to the left behind me slowing down cars wanting to undertake. It could have been so much worse, but thankfully it wasn’t.

We’ll live to fight another day

It’s hard to see in the pics and vid so I’ll know later when I get it up. Hopefully if still has decent thread.

Lucky escape, it sounds like you did well to hold it!

Something at the back of my mind says these bolts are supposed to be replaced when changing the bushes, but I haven't got my TIS to hand?

Wow! Very lucky - glad you escaped the worst. :o

When was it last MOT'd? The bush + carrier should have been eyeballed by someone at that point, so you could make a reasonably safe assumption re. when it was last ok.

I think you'll need to check the front axle pretty carefully on that side. Probably also the length of the ARB too.

It wasn't the lollipop that failed. It was the idiot that didn't torque the bolts up correctly when they fitted the Meyle HD replacements that failed....big time ! :o

Remarkably little damage considering your car ended up upside down with a tow truck on top

Glad you and it are OK - looks hairy.

Glad you ok! Probably not the time but what front lip is that  ?

It’s the Maxton Design one. I have the side skirt extensions and rear parts also.

Flipping Heck, or words starting with F & H :o :o . Really lucky to have controlled that mate, glad you're Ok. Got to be a faulty installation that! Is there no locking feature on the lollipops, spring washer/star washer or spring/nylock bolt?

Well done keeping a calm head and pulling over safely. Another day that could have been realy rather bad. :o

Hope it's not to bad to sort and get you back enjoying your Zed. :)

That looked pretty scary Nick!

Glad you managed to catch it and get it stopped - I hope you can get your car back to full health soon.
