Factory fitted cruise - is there a light in the display?

Yeah, as Andysat says, no light. Strange, my 3 series had one. The Z4 system is effectively 'ready' all the time....

Or that's how I think of it :)

I thought it odd as well, but it turns out that it's not much of a bother. There's very few situations where you're not sure if it's engaged or not.

exactly, take your foot off the gas and the car keeps going, my 1 series only shows for a second or two then nothing and I don't find it confusing.

That's so true.

I think this is one of those situations where you think you need a light or something, but don't really.

I suppose the real giveaway is when you take your foot of the accelerator and don't slow down :poke:

No light on either my Zed or my Passat estate....the latter has a light to say the systems enabled (you can switch it on or off) but nothing to says its engaged.

I do however have an engaged indicator light on the aftermarket unit I had fitted to my Nissan 4x4....

As has been said, it may not be a big deal in most cases since the usual braking, gear change actions disengage it, but bearing down on a set of traffic lights at 70mph isn't the time to be confused....a couple of seconds delay could be the difference between stopping safely or, at best, an embarrassing skid....so I've no idea why they don't provide something.... :driving:

I find it a bizarre ommission as well - very rarely do I find that I've forgotten it's on but as lacroupade says it only takes a second of not realising to have to jab on the brakes rather more quickly than you otherwise would; every other car I've driven with cruise has a dash indicator.

When I had it retro-fitted the indy (BMW specialist in Telford, I forget the name) even commented that he 'couldn't find a connection for the warning light but the system definitely works' when he installed it...

Also the new Z4's system is great in that it indicates what speed its set at and also what speed is in the CC memory on the speedo, very useful!

but surely the position of your right foot tells you if CC is active or not :?

how much would it cost BMW to fit a lamp?

No light on our 3 series, just an indicator on the speedo where you've set the speed to. To be honest, you're always aware it's on as the right foot gets to take a not entirely necessary break.

I too really can't see the point in having an indicator. How can you forget if you have CC engaged if your foot is relaxed? Sure, an indication of the set speed would probably be nice (but still not really necessary), but the light to tell you it's on is IMO pretty useless.

I also really like that the CC system is always active. It made sense to have an enable button on cars with a separate mechanical system controlled the throttle, rather than the electronic throttle system used on the Zed (and many modern cars). But then again I drive with the CC on probably 75% of the time. Stops me from getting speeding fines ;)

I think the point is not that you forget in normal circumstances but as follows; Let's say you have the CC set to *ahem* 65 on mway then use the accelerator to pull out into faster traffic (say up to *ahem* 70...).

The CC still remains set at 65 for several minutes. If after a minute or so a car pulls out in front of you, you relax the throttle to ease back down & unless you physically brake or tap the CC stalk the car won't slow below the set speed ie 65.

Although its never an issue as 99.9 % of the time you are aware of it there have been odd occasions where I've then had to jump on the brake PDQ as the car in front is still gradually slowing whilst the CC is maintaining the set speed...

To me a light to indicate the car will not slow down as you would normally expect in this circumstances is a bit of a no brainer considering the amount of expensive safety kit BMW pack into the rest of the car??
