I've always been disappointed with the reversing lights and tried many different cheapo LED options to try and improve them with little success.
Now have a set of these LEDs:

Much better but with a hefty price tag as you can't get them in the UK, having said that I probably spent just as much on the cheap LEDs from ebay.
If you're in the US it's worth looking out for them with a retail of about $20-25.
