A fair point OG. I don't think I'd buy any car of my own new anyway, I'd probably always buy second-hand - initial depreciation hit on someone else. I agree about the car allowance... Sadly, and unlike my last job, this one doesn't carry a car allowance :x

Not sure about the residuals Gary. Look at this one - http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/jaguar/xkr/jaguar-xk-xkr-s-coupe/3302747 -this would've been over £100k new in 2011. 23k miles later and it's lost £50k. Compare that to a GT3 RS over the same period. That will have gone up by about £20k in value. That's a £70k decision...on similar, track focused, limited edition specials.

It's a piece of kit for £50k though....

I guess if I was in the fortunate position of being able to run 3 cars and tuck one of them away I'd look at it differently - that way I could afford to be worried about the depreciation caused by age/mileage/market, and would also have the platform to trade up in future.

But when it comes down to it my car is currently my daily driver, meaning I'm going to put 15k miles a year on it for the foreseeable, so I'm not going to get bogged down in resale value. That way madness lies in my situation... However I can guarrantee that if I ever sell it the car will be one of the best condition & best looked after out there, so should command the best price possible for whatever age/mileage it is. And it will more than likely be paid off, so all equity... ignoring sunk losses like loan repayments - after all, once it's gone it's gone :D

Back on topic, I think the depreciation conversation shouldn't significantly take away from what is a truly epic car, from a manufacturer who is making a resurgence in a big way. Personally I love the pops and bangs... Must be my secret chav/hooligan side :evil:
 
Just the persona of having a Jag......I don't think you can ever shake off the tag that they have.

I'd personally still have a fully specced up 35IS than a 3.0 F Type Convertible.
 
Agreed Bing, i think its fantastic that there is real choice in this market now which there hasn't been for a long time . It will probably take a few iterations before they get it as good as the 911 . But they will get there i remember when Discovery 3 / RRS came out there was a lot of sucking of teeth that it would be as good as the X5 / Now Gen2 RRS is priced above the X5 . so JLR have a track record recently of getting there .

The more mainstream models seem to hold up a lot better though...£45k seems to be the base at the moment...

I love it, it really is a thing of beauty. I don't think the Jag is still considered an old's mans car now, the past few years have really changed that point of view imo. If anything I think the 911 is more old mans car.

I cant think of any merc i would have over an F type....

I truly think they are a great car,and when they come into my price bracket i will have one (it might be a while yet :cry: )
 
@OG totally agree about the exhaust probably quite a novelty at the beginning but couldn't own a car where exhaust needs to be so overly synthesised....

Overall it's a cool car imo, different market to porkers and definitely a talking point. The only Porsche I'm eyeing up is a macan, jeez life has changed!

Or an S Class AMG Coupe?
 
Have just watched the review - it's not just the looks and the interior, it's got to be the dynamics and the first part of the review sells it for me. Road performance and enjoyment counts high on my list with a car like this - just listening to Harris's enthusiastic description - it gets my vote. :thumbsup:

Ally that with the noise and the name. . . . I'm old enough to think of Jaguar's racing heritage - it truly was the BMW of my childhood so don't have an issue with the badge. :D

I'm not as convinced by the looks however - though the coupe does look better than the roadster, it all seems a little too 'flat' to me. . . . :?

As for depreciation - I'm all for it - it means it's going to be affordable at some time for me. . . . :thumbsup:

Agreed. The S class - even in AMG guise - is a limousine, albeit a very, very fast one. But definitely not a sports car. The AMG GT is pitched into the supercar market and is so IMO not really a valid comparison to the F-Type. The R is not much less than a GT, but the base price for an 'ordinary' F-Type coupe is £50k vs. £ 95k for the AMG GT. Still think the F-Type looks better as well.
 
The front of the AMG GT is gopping.....

I do like the look of it in general,but not at £100,000...
