Expensive number plates on cheap cars

Don't forget some of these people probably brought the plates years ago dirt cheap and just keep changing them with each new car they buy.

Know what you mean, I saw a stupidly expensive plate on a 14 year old (ish) Corsa the other day. If only I could remember what the plate was. Something like TA 38.....

Stood out like a sore thumb

I see TOY 1 most days on a battered ford Sierra. I might see if the owner is selling the " car". :)

Mainly the reason is it saves the retention fees, put it on a banger and it stays on it as long as it's MOT'd at no cost.

Then when the finances are improved the impoverished owners can reapply it to a "relevant" motor vehicle.

Having said that I have an expensive one on my Cooper S and it's to show off...... :P

My mate has a 2001 reg focus, with over 150k miles and more rust spot then miles... But has the reg plate F1 RAJ (his name is raj!) he paid close to 10 times more for it then he did his car!!

My dad nearly got my wife K1 RAN (her name) but bid upto £4k for it... It went for over £8k... I told him that if he had got that plate would have been very expensive for me... As i would need to replace her (then) 1.4 fiesta!

You can't really steal a registration number, it is just a registration, the car is metal and can be turned into cash. :)

Andi.

some plates are not as expensive as you might think, i wanted Dr 07 dom which is <1K but never had a car new enough!

it does make you wonder tho why people spend loads on a plate and stick it on a naff car. each to their own i guess :D

I think with a lot of plates especially dateless ones would have been bought years ago before there was this whole obsession with number plates and making money off it.

I'm sure a lot would have been passed down from family members as well. I highly doubt someone would go out and splash £50k or more on a plate and have a 2k car.

In Brookwood an elderly lady drives a (I'm guessing - 1998) plain white Toyota Corolla (offensive car anyway) that has pink roses and stems on the sides of the car. Sort of like a transfer.

So given the lovely wheel trims the car must be worth about £500.00 if that and yet the number plate is HI

:o

This. I imagine that the old lady may once have had H1 on a Bentley, back in the day when she cared about it. It'll come to us all one day. :(

I still think that VA57 NOB for £250 is a great plate. Still available at DVLA and ideal for a 2007 Zed (or later). We're my car not a 56 Reg I'd have bought it. Hell, I'd buy it regardless but my other cars are 55 and 07 reg.
