Expansion Tank Auto Transmission Thermostat

Greetings all,

Question for the forum: I had my expansion tank rupture a couple of days ago and had my Zed towed back to the house. I have replaced exp tanks on other vehicles so this was not a big issue. Until I researched the thing and found that the auto transmission has a thermostat and is quite often the root cause of the exp tank over pressurizing. Sure enough, the tabs that hold the thermostat cover had broken and caused the tank to rupture. I have a new tank and thermo on order but the Zed will be hard down until next Friday when they arrive. Question is, I can repair the exp tank but not the thermo and was curious if anyone had any thoughts on running the vehicle sans thermostat? I have run Corvettes without thermostats without issue but Zeds are beasts unto themselves and was tracing the cause/effect path on what might transpire were the auto tranny to have coolant constantly flowing?

My Zed is a daily driver when it rains and the first part of next week promises quite a bit with Hurricane Matthew knocking at the back door. On sunny days I will be riding the Hog so this would be for 1-2 days max.

Any thoughts?

Also, what brilliant engineer at BMW thought putting plastic next to a heat exchanger was a good idea? AND why on God's green Earth do they charge $90 for a thermostat and $150 for a plastic tank that is next to a Goram heat exchanger?????

After more research, I have found a whole passel of folks that had the same issue with their ATF thermo and never replaced the thing. The exp tank is still yet to arrive but the thermo got here yesterday. I have driven the Zed on a few short trips with the repaired tank/sans thermo and she drives as advertised. The only thing I have going now is a "Service Engine Soon" light that came on when she originally overheated with the blown tank.
