Exhaust option sounds

I know there are loads of threads about exhausts for the "M", but it would be useful to have a single thread that describes the differences in sound and prices paid for the following:

- Eisenmann (slightly louder than stock?)
- Supersprint (slightly louder than stock - similar sound)
- Supersprint Race (even louder than stock - similar sound)
- Hayward and Scott (not much rumble under 3000rpm, louder above - raspier sound)
- RPI (straight through) (very loud, over 105db - crazy sound)
- Stromung (more of a "metal" sound? sounds cool on youtube)
- Custom made (longlife, etc?)

Am I fairly accurate on the above?

I've been considering longlife custom (£550 plus VAT), or a Hayward and Scott (H&S) for (£700 plus VAT). Anyone else gotten a deal well below this or would consider selling me their upgraded exhaust?

rpi = tooo loud. (TVR type noise) loud pops and bangs on the overun, very very noisey. too loud for a Daily drive imo. but............. the noise is nothing short of biblical. alexman theirs a superint for sale in the classified at 600ono, for a nearly new system, youd be mad to pass that up imo and will be just what your after sound wise i think.

Perhaps also what performance gains (or not) the change of system makes.....?

Personally I would stay away from longlife type custom exhausts especially. This is my own opinion but an exhaust is a crucial part, tuned to the characteristics of an engine. Shoving something on not tried and tested can easily lose a car some power even if it sounds good. I think it depends on the system though, if it's just back boxes it may be okay, but for a full system especially it needs to be well designed and tested - something BMW do and can afford to do, but most aftermarket exhaust makers probably don't.

I would stick with the well known brands, namely Eisenmann and SUpersprint of the European exhausts available. Doing so will mean you won't just have a few steel cans welded together with a hope for the best performance wise.

Years ago I knew of two cars with expensive aftermarket exhausts on that were down on power from 230bhp to 145-160-ish BHP, all lost because of an exhaust. Before I knew this, it was an exhaust I nearly fitted to the same model of car aalso until I spoke to the manufacturer who confessed they've never actually tested the exhaust on the car, they just created a one-off exhaust for a customer and used the same jigs to create more when others wanted them. On speaking to them further, they left a part out of the exhaust to keep the price down. COme on, a performance exhaust company selling exhausts that kill HP partly because they want to keep the cost down just isn't good. It also explains why the BMW developed system cost £1200+, because it was perfected :).So when I heard of the two cars using the exhaust I nearly purchased being so far down on power I just wasn't surprised.

I think in the summer we should organise a dyno day at a reputable place with a good few M cars attending with various exhausts fitted and compare the charts, and not just peak power. I think it would be hard to beat the standard BMW system

Good point - has anyone with an aftermarket system had it dyno tested? I think I read sixspeed had a H&S system tested with only 6hp ish difference. Anyone else found differences - gains or losses?

Not an M but I'm waiting for an Eisenmann box for mine. Sound wise, I live in hope! I've gone for the sports system which is meant to scale up with revs. Even the guys I spoke to at Eisenmann in Germany told me I didn't want the Race system if I was planning on driving any distance. I think there is only one system for an M and that's a Race spec... so loud! Worth speaking to A-L Tuning or contact the guys in Germany.

Speaking to Mike at A-L Tuning (also on here somewhere) and he made a good point, these cars (even the non-M!) have enough sensors and ECU trickery that they adjust to any changes in airflow in, and I suspect out, so performance gains are minimal without any mapping. Even then I wouldn't expect to see any big gains. That's on the gains side. Agree with Darren M that a bad system could have a detrimental affect without any additional input

Only thing with Eisenmann, other than price... the damn waiting!

Having had a good hunt about looking at options I quite like the sound of the Diablo system. But that's £1,300 UK supplied. It would be good to get all the different systems together on the same day, dyno them, measure noise and vote for the best sound then pronounce a winner!

Bet there'd still be an arguement :)

They all give dyno proven HP gains according to the makers :)

no they dont. One of the most popular aftermarket systems for the z4m is advertised as sound and look only. also if a system adds 2bhp but weighs another 10lbs then theirs no real world gain, so weight is another huge factor for my choice also.

An extensive exhausts thread would make a great sticky. Perhaps the original poster can update the first post with new information everytime someone contributes. Links to videos, review threads etc.

For example here's some info about the RPI GT system me and Beedub have:

Sweet exhausts/mine not an m(one day soon, hopefully),but like the sound of the eisnm myself/tho cost is a bit high? supersprint, etc seem good alt? :driving:

Just a word of warning on custom made systems. I've just discovered that Longlife had cut off the flanges from the centre section to prefabricate the new custom system 2 years ago. I'd picked up the old system in a van and dumped it in the loft so I only noticed when thinking about refitting it to take a set of Superspirint boxes. I always wanted to keep the OEM system for obvious reasons and so I'm a bit p**sed off to say the least!

So if anyone knows where an OEM cente resonator section can be had please let me know!
