Exhaust material

100% stainless steel on all models of the 85/86 BMW seem to value the exhaust as a life long part

I would also be very suppressed if its mild steel on the 89.

Its not the highest grade stainless steel though....
"stainless" so to speak
But it doesnt rust through, its just some surface flaking.

Mine dose not have any serface flaking on it at all? And when welding them they weld lovely. Your right they are not the best stainless. But they are a lot better than what many cars have. 100% Not mild steel.

Flakes and spots are definately showing. The material is 304 or less. (stainless doesnt mean it wont rust, especially when it gets hot. Its also not passified at the factory, see the welds)

  Ah come on its been under a car for 10 years!! I think that looks bloody good. If it was a Pugeot it would have had a new one every other year!!!

I'm not saying it doesnt look good or that it's not functional, I just said its fairly low grade stainless steel.

In the "olden days" exhaust systems used to last three years - a pal has my my 2004 E85 with the original system on it - it has to be stainless or at least a high chromium steel.
Who gives a stuff what grade it is if it lasts 12 years or more.
