Exhaust issue. HELP :(

Hi all,

I have a 2004, 3.0

I have been hearing a constant "rattle" like noise coming from the exhaust when im driving and when stopped and the gear is in neutrual.
So I took the car to a mechanic. He said the problem is from the "conventer kit"? his english is pretty bad, maybe he meant "converter kit". Anyway his solution was to remove the broken component that is causing the noise.

The dealer said i need to buy new exhaust manifolds (2units) that will cost around $1,300/unit

I have attached the list that the dealer made along with images of the car. I'd appreciate it if someone can explain what could be the cause and whether i need to buy all the things on that list to fix this issue.

I'm really frustrated with what to do, I dont want to pay that much money for an exhaust, and Im not sure I should risk letting the independant mechanic experiment on it.

please any recomendation or advice would be highly appreciated.

Aha. I think my mechanic thinks that's whats casuing the sound. and he wants to remove it? And he says there are some people who remove the converter because it basically could add better performance to the car? Does that sound right?

People do remove them in the belief it increases performance , but not the two that are part of the exhaust manifolds, you,l end up with the engine managment warning light on all the time if you remove those

I just want to make sure, Do you think opening up the exhaust and removing the broken catalytic converter would be a good solution? And if the only side affect is a warning light, I can live with that.
I just don't want to pay around 800 pounds per exhaust...
