Saying that my mates evo 9 left a few of us standing on the way home from Rally GB this year. It was wet though and the rest of us were in 2wd machinery!

Nice. It was great this year - even the weather held out until the final stage! Lots of top-down blasts between stages.

We were Z4 x 2, 997 C4S, 330d. The porker has insane traction - in the wet it just left everybody else standing! And just to rub it in, my mate was fine negotiating muddy car parks in it and we were f*cked!

The current 330d is an absolute rocketship. Comfortably faster than any non-M Z4 and there are loads of them on the road.

Takes me back to my old job where the boss would treat us to a yearly Lombard RAC rally stage treat.

I was only about 20 but I think it was staged in marquees in Brum. Proper event even better travelling back down south in a "state of the art" Ford XR4x4i.....Lee

This is true it can be good fun trying though! many times I have bailed because its just getting too silly...nowadays though finding someone up for a little fun is few and far between with the weight of traffic on the roads and speed cameras around every corner.

I sometimes wish I was a little older because it bet it would have been awesome back in the seventies/early eighties if you had something fast

I was in my twenties in the late 70's and owned a worked on Austin Healy 3000 which could be more than a little tail happy. I remember trying to keep up with my pal in his brand new E type V12 and at a registered 145 mph, my engine surrendered (expensive rebuild). I wonder now just how lucky I was not to pile points on my licence (or even worse) with some of the situations I got into. At that age and time it just seemed great fun. There is no doubt that as you get older you are more aware of mortality and risk. We took the Z4 to visit old friends near Hannover last weekend, wanting to visit Hameln (pied piper town) and see the Christmas markets. On the drive up through France Belgium and Holland I was able to enjoy the Zed but looked forward to getting on the German autobahns to really try it out. Typically, by the time we got over the border the heavens had opened and the rain was extremely heavy. Although I still cruised at 90-100 mph when traffic allowed I was amazed at the big Audis, BMW's and Merc's still hacking down the fast lane at 130-140 MPH. Even more unbelievable that they did not seem to slow when it became totally dark, the rain got as bad as I have ever known, so bad that I couldn't see the white lines of the lanes at all (no autobahn lights) and still the big saloons kept up those kinds of speeds. I've been back driving in Germany every year since I lived there in the 70's so I am very used to the speeds but this was just plain scary! Or am I just old and more cautious now?

Autobahns

I've just spent the last 2 months driving like a nutter around the Bavarian Autobahns and I completely agree about the big Audi/VW's cruising up behind you.

It's wierd.
Like pulling off the motorway in the UK after a spirited drive and realising that you have to drive accordingly (not 70 leptons)

I still enjoy going quick when I get the chance and I agree as you get older you do consider the what if? but when you are younger it isn't even considered.

Driving quickly up a long straight road i.e motorway/autobahn doesn't do it for me. Welsh B roads will sort the men out from the boys :wink:

I understand what you mean...but I am not very good in the corners so I just seem obsessed with finding a straight road and going as quick as I can and admitted I am in the minority but I just never get bored with it.

Plus on a straight at least you can see what you might hit...going fast around a corner is always a massive gamble because you never know what`s around the other side!

Reminds me of my 993 - you'd pull up next to a Fofucs and it would dwarf you. Really felt like you were scraping your arse on the ground

Nah, we arrived late on Friday and then did two full days (full as in 5am-to-beer o'clock!). I guess I'm not a rally fan anymore - used to be, when I was younger - but I am a Rally GB fan. WRC seems to have lost some of its TV appeal over the past decade, but going to Rally GB is epic - it has a great vibe to it and as you say, some of the local roads are incredible.
