The end

There was no question in your original post, so we didn't know what you were asking :P

The route depends on what you want to see/do and whether you just want to drive fast or see some sights along the way - i.e. the autobahn/autoroute/autopista will be quicker, but boring - and don't forget to add plenty of time for getting stuck in city centre traffic in Paris, Monaco, Milan, Zurich, Munich, Brussels.

Can't advise on a better route though as I tend to have a destination in mind and then plan a route depending on how much time I have/want to spend on the road - and I tend to change my mind as I see fit.

Sounds like a great trip. You'll love Monaco. Don't leave it too late or you'll need the snow chains!!

Yes, but usually only when I've got a specific destination or a couple of destinations in mind.

I've done Liverpool to Barcelona to Frankfurt to Liverpool, Liverpool/Hamburg, Liverpool/Brussels and regularly do Liverpool to Nurburg.

A lot of the Alpine passes are starting to close already due to snow, so check when you're going! Also, I'd suggest you're a little optimistic with your timings. When I'm home and on a computer I can explain more and show you our route we took, but unless you plan on just taking motorways and huge tunnels though the mountains, it's going to taken you a lot longer than 3 hours to get from Milan to Zurich! It takes forever to get through the Alpine passes, but it is worth it. Just make sure you don't tire yourself out from driving.

I remember we were averaging less than 30mph heading from Italy to Switzerland, and some of that included high speed motorways.

It's a wonderful trip. I'll put up some photos, videos and maps of our trip when I'm home, I'm currently working away for a few days. We did Dover to Dunkirk, Brussels, Spa Grand Prix, Stuttgart, Lake Como, Monza Grand Prix, through Switzerland and onto Mulhouse, then Reims and then Dunkirk. Took 2 weeks in all.

Great list, but all seems a little 'gumball'

I mean there are some fantastic roads within all of the countries listed, but from looking at your dates all you will see will be motorways

I just got from 5 day tearing around the swiss alpine roads - If we had more time we would have done more of the southern swiss, northern italian routes

I would ask you do you want just to tick off places you drive through? or actually see and experience some of the local sites and roads?

The reason for the route is that my wife has hardly been abroad and probably last chance to do this before having kids this is just the start of a plan looking to go about April/may

I would second the furka and grimsal recommendation. Amazing roads and scenery, plus an ice cave in the glacier. As for visiting Brussels and Strasbourg, personally I wouldn't bother.

Lyon to Monaco must be done via the Route Napoleon for maximum enjoyment, and pop up to the Col du Turini while in that neck of the woods.

Is the main thrust of the road trip the evenings in the destination or the driving? If the latter you'll find as others have said that you'll only achieve your timings with a lot of motorway miles and that's no fun.

get down to Clemont Ferrend and just start coin tossing at juctions.....heads for left tails for right....its all good
enjoy...

Check out the road trip report from jaxZ4 in the road trip section - some of the roads on there look pretty good, worth a read, but make a coffee first as it could take a while to read right through

I would resist trying to see the world on one road trip. You will regret it. As people will ask you what you did and what you saw along the way. At which point you will show your friends a checklist with towns you passed through. One thing you can do. Would be to pick a destination that has some good opportunities for day trips.

My wife and I have suffered through some trips that have been so busy. That we really didn't see much. As we were to tight on time to enjoy what the area had to offer. We live an hour south of Frankfurt. From there we can get to Strasbourg and the route du vin de alsace, Luxembourg, Stuttgart, Koln & Koblenz, Nurburgring. All of those are within 1.5-3 hrs.

You could go to Grindelwald Switzerland rent a chalet and make some great day trips. The one we rented there was only 100 CHF per day. And it had a kitchen. Which saved us big money by not having to go out for breakfast, and then packing a lunch. Then eating out for dinner.

As always. If you (or any forum member) find yourself driving near the Kaiserslautern area. Let me know. There are a couple of castles near here that have pubs/restaurants in them. Or I'll BBQ some bratwurst.
