Euro speeding

I read (Times) that speeding offences in Germany, France , Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Portugal will be applied in UK courts under an EU directive to be applied in May - it says the UK been granted a two year negotiation period.

I hope they will have the same signage throughout and apply the rules to our Euro visitors!

i'd be surprised actually , we always seem to abide by eu rules and get shafted whilst a lot of the other members flaunt them :headbang:

Speed cameras in Germany are grey and seem to be hidden, no speed limit signs pre villages so it all seems to be biased in favour of our euro cousins !

Implemented in May 2016 I think as per the original approval. We have a year to enjoy ourselves.

I'm not suggesting we all go to the Europe to speed but there should be some standardisation of the signs, rules and road markings.

I love speeding in Europe. France has such smooth roads as does Belgium, and even if you get stopped for a penalty fine, it's worth it.

In Germany be careful running camera in hire cars, as the hire firms will come chasing you....but I think they give up after a while.

I don't think much of the Belgian motorways as there always seems to be roadworks (with no-one) working at them, or lumpy concrete, or some strange rippled surface (to help with drainage I assume) that makes a tremendous noise at the speed limit (+/-10kph).

Maybe they just do that on the routes we take to Spa/Nurburgring?

Soon it will be a summons from the local magistrates tho plus the implications of points and the insurance company questions :(

Big brother is watching you!

Still won't happen in France maybe if you get stopped by local plod who will fine you, and it's worth paying €100 if caught doing 140mph....never happened to me yet, and not sure what they do at those high speeds.

That part is not quite correct, it will be a money exchange only (as it will be levied against the car owner like in Europe and not against the driver). There will be no impact on insurance or points.

If we ban you you won't keep speeding and we won't get as much Wonga, just hand it over and get the hammer down again English...........

The trick in Germany is this, I only found this out after a few trips there.

When you enter a town or city (ie. you pass the classic town sign) the speed limit is 50KPH (ie 30mph) unless otherwise signposted.

I have been caught out myself as here our speed limits are dictated by road type - over there if it is in a town and it looks like a motorway, unless it is signposted otherwise then it is still 30mph!

Ive just been lucky for many years!
Ive sailed thro some places in the past without realising it - Some German friends couldn't understand how I had not been caught!

The signs are there at each border crossing for all to see.

I don't like the give way to the right at side roads either.

...and to be fair to the Germans, they don't tend to put cameras up on fast roads - just in the towns/villages.

Although I'm sure I misunderstood the 'clearway' sign on the 'tank road' on my way to the ring, as we were doing 150mph and the Polizei in the Passat coming the other way must have got whiplash when their necks snapped around so quick to see a GTR and M5 shooting past.

There's a move to apply speed limits on the the Autobahn in some states :(

So enjoy it while you can.

To stir up an old thread....

I had the good fortune to have the hire car I picked up in Stuttgart on Monday upgraded to a Ford Mustang 5.0. Long story short after some considerably faster than UK blasts I drove through a speed restricted zone on the A8 (I think it was 110) and got flashed by a front facing red camera. I think I was doing about 130. Anyone know how that is likely progress......?

In 2016 I got flashed in a German village. Think the limit was 20kph (a silly speed limit) and we were on a spirited drive in the black Forrest. Nothing ever came of it. Front facing grey camera.

Hire car is German though, a different matter. I notice more and more UK registered cars getting fines as well.

My last run last year was still clean though for my UK registered car despite flashes.

I got a ticket from Germany last year was doing 90 kph in a 80 kph zone and was fined €20
If you google it I think there's a chart that will show you how much the fine will be for 20kph over

Found it for you

Indeed , i triggered a fixed camera just outside Calais exactly a month back & nothing arrived through post , it appears the plans to introduce a reciprocal arrangement with France RE speed fines was shelved with the brexit vote :) another plus point :P
As for Newbers with the hire car  i fear a fine but no points could be the outcome there :(
