Hi guys,
Hoping you can share some input on these error codes I currently have on my 2007 Z4 3.0si with an N52 engine. Mileage currently at 95k.
2A98 - Digital Motor Electronics (DME), crankshaft - intake camshaft, reference
2A82 - Digital Motor Electronics (DME), VANOS (Variable Camshaft Timing) intake
The car has an orange engine light on, and occasionally a rough idle with the odd cough. The pull is fine though, plenty power throughout the range still.
Having spoken to a BMW specialist today, they went straight for faulty VANOS units, each will be £350+vat. They also mentioned the timing chain may have stretched so could also require replacing. All of this before proper testing of the issues, just speculation.
I have read/seen that the VANOS solenoids (two of) can be easily removed from the N52 engine and either cleaned or simply replaced. These don’t seem too expensive to replace either. Is this the best starting point?
My mechanic has very little knowledge on VANOS so is not sure how to tackle this issue. He did say however that if I want the engine timing tested, I’m as well just to replace the timing chain and gaskets etc for around £500-600. But surely it makes sense to start with the solenoids, and see where I go from there?
Just wanted to hear some of your thoughts on this and and advice you would have to share?
Thanks!
