Digging around in my engine bay (E85 M54) recently and I noticed a plastic duct at the bottom of the nearside back corner leading off to the firewall from just behind the suspension tower (marked with white arrow). Pic isnt the best, sorry about that.
Can anyone shed any light on its' purpose?
It has a top-hinged 'flap' covering the end opening, facing the strut tower which was in an open position when I noticed it and said opening is about 6cm x 8cm with a rounded off square profile.
Initial thoughts were that it was some sort of ventilation duct or extra cabin-warming feature taking warm air from the engine bay into the cabin. But then I thought, er. no......seriously? the smells! Plus the heater is there for that purpose.
Suffice to say, I closed the flap, which doesnt seem to lock in any way but does fit closed and flush to the open end as I thought it would be perfect for any curious little rodents to nest in should they be so inclined!
