Engine will not turnover.

Ouch - sorry it looks like the worst possible scenario as I pointed to earlier. Just glad you didn't try any bump starting, etc. and minimised the damage of attempting to force the engine.

Before getting into new engines I would talk to the garage about pulling the plugs out to see if there is any hydraulic lock from oil or water in there (things like Ed suggests). Then pressure test the bores. If all OK then drop the bottom off and check the con rods, etc. Next is top off and once you know exaclty what went wrong then consider a new engine if something is damaged beyond economic repair.

I'd call the regular breakers of BMW and get some prices, but avoid Ebay as you can have no real idea of where the engine came from.
 
First things first, pull the plugs... 10 min job! See whats in there. It could be just a case of drain the oil out of cylinders, replace CCV, topup oil, done. If you werent going fast when it died, there's only a small chance anything has died in the engine - trust me.

Theres absolutely loads of other threads on this, and even a BMW bulletin... If there is any damage, it may be worth asking them for some pennies!

That's what I said a few hours ago in agreement with you, so we've said it 3 times - well make this 4 :poke:
Def too soon to be thinking about buying engines at this stage until some obvious tests have been done
 
Ouch - not good and shows how getting engines up to temp is important, although I'm still surprised it happened like this.

You really should not have tried to force turn it over with the starter as it can compound the damage. Hopefully once the bottom end is dropped off you'll find just a bent rod and no bore damage and it can be readily rebuilt at reasonanle cost.
