Engine rattle

Set out from home this morning with the top and the windows down. Driving through the next village, about 3.5 miles from home, I was horrified to hear a distinct rattle echoing back from the roadside walls. I pulled over and turned off the radio - sure enough it was my engine. I decided to return home and use the other car, with a view to consulting the local indy at the weekend. By the time I reached home (after 7 miles, in other words) the rattle had vanished.

Should I worry?

How long have you had the car and can you describe the noise more. Was it a tapping sound or like something was loose.

If it a facelift model?

I've had the car for 6 months. It's a facelift 2.5i, and it's done about 50,000m.

I'd describe it as more of a tapping sound than something loose. I suppose I wouldn't expect something loose to stop rattling as the engine warmed up.

Thanks, I saw that before I posted, but decided it was a different enough engine to warrant the question.

The car might have been standing a while, but not more than a week at the outside. I haven't heard the rattle since the day I posted, so I guess it's just one of those things.
