I'm afraid so :(

Just Google BMW N20 noise, cold start etc. The common explanation is the high pressure direct injectors however my conclusion is oil starvation until the system is upto pressure and the oil warmed up.

Its a smooth engine when thoroughly warm but even then its still tappety. Its about the worst sounding engine I've ever had in a car :cry:

I was about to ask the same thing, I thought it was a fault with my car!

It's such a horrible sound!

Can't say I've noticed this with my 28i, and essentially it's the same engine as the 20i but different mapping.
 
Sounds about right, give it some revs lol ;)

However new 2.0 diesel is even worse if any consolation!?
