It was horrible...like my friend's three cylinder VW Polo Diesel...
Does anyone know what this can be?

No its not the DISA unit, it's a known problem with the N52 engine and it's the HVA's (Hydraulic Valve Adjusters)

I hadthe same issue and had a complete new head assembly under warranty, although I dont believe BMW are doing this anymore they are just changing the HVA's, although I cant see how this fixes the problem as the head is modified with a non return valve. I suppose they may have put a non return valve in the HVA's though.

but heres a link to my post about it.

Yep - i had the same, but they opened a "puma" case similar to Steve and sorted it that way.
The thread is fully comprehensive
Mine was done under warranty - 25k miles in my old 2.5si

Thanks for the write up in the other topic.
Since my car was damaged and been rebuilt, it was stationary for about 2-3 month, I will try to use it for a week or two, and hope the noise will disapear,
Cross fingers for it. :|
I dunno, how long do I have waranty, I bought it second hand with 33,000 Km on the cloks and and been produced in 2006. Dec. 28. ???

Believe me the problem wont go away, you will mask it if the car is used everyday, but even then it may still come back. You can read the history of mine in that thread, but in the end it will get worse, in the end mine did it everytime I collected it from the dealer, dont ask me why but it was a great help. :D

Regarding warranty looks like your just out, depends when the car was registered and what warranty BMW offer in your country.

However as this is a know problem I would persue for a good will gesture at the very least.

There was a do it yourself method of possibly solving this... Cant remember the website though.... You were dupposed to park in neutral, press the clutch and rev the engine at about 3-3,5K RPM fopr about 3 minutes. Try it! Its free and harmless :)
