Engine mounts (again)...questions

I do sprints in the SE/East Anglia -- I'm registered in the AEMC, ASEMC and ACSMSC sprint championships -- so mostly North Weald (bumpy), Debden, Brands Hatch (expensive), Lydden, Snetterton (lots of waiting), Hethel (excellent) and Abingdon (loads of runs, well organized). I planned to do the Brighton Speed Trials (I even got a Nat A licence so I could get more runs) but there was a clash last year and it was cancelled this year. Fearful of bending the Z4 as I've collected a few cones in my time, so I run a Citroen Saxo that I bought for £800. I ran an MR2 for 2 years that cost me £5000 all in (including purchase, consumables, fixing stuff and selling it), and then a Saxo for 2 years which has cost me about £6000 all in. Mostly because I had to buy two Saxos -- my dad rolled the first one. If you can find someone to double drive with of course the cost is halved (so actually it's cost me £3k over two years). Entry costs are about £1000-£1200 a year if you do 10 events. Some do more, some do fewer. Class A5 (roadgoing, above 2 litres) is dominated by a couple of Porsche GT3s at the moment so we could do with someone to give them a bloody nose. One of them has been beaten on occasion by a current Mini Cooper S (loses at least 0.5s off the line from being FWD, hard to make up in the rest of the lap) and a supercharged MX-5.

Sounds like great fun  Thanks for the information - I might send you a PM for more information once I've enough cash to start competing.
I'm not sure that Brighton Speed Trials will happen next year (or again) after the fatal bike and sidecar crash last year. If it does, I'm very keen to take part - I take it the Nat A licence isn't mandatory, but simply allows you more runs as you suggest?

i do agree, definite point where its all abit pointless, the headline HP figure isnt what i seek now, id just like a bump in TQ now.... plus the big blower is just getting into its efficiency range @ 10lbs so it'll really wake up, im going to built a blower Brace too to keep bracket flex to a minimum.... this engine with boost just feels and sounds nuts, you must try and get to me in 2014 for a run out :-) The car is feeling pretty wonderful right now, really pleased and proud of it.... as something completely different im going to enter a few show and shine events next year as rather sadly, i enjoy cleaning the thing as much as driving and modding it....

Carl pretty much hit the nail on the head and i've been brought up around sprint circuits/ hill climbs, curbourough/shelsly , ive never really had an interest in the large circuits, i like small timed tracks/scene that are tight and technical, you can hit great speeds but they focus on agility, acceleration and nimbleness, if your car performs well on decent sprint circuit it imo translates to a very well sorted car in other area's.... Not to mention you CAN keep the car looking immaculate as it just you and the track and the clock( Being careful as Curb isnt the most of forgiving places), i keep well short of my limit for fear of bending my pride and joy.
Every mod i do is benchmarked on Curb and i can usually see the benefits or pitfalls immediately, this is by far the most fun ive had with a car, the journey has been worth every single penny.

i fully intend to strap some numbers on the car and actually compete when my son grows up a little, being a lone parent, working full time and hobbies just dont mix, but its getting alot better,!!!!
Right now i'm more than happy hiring the circuit with a group of track car wielding friends and honing my car and skills a little further, we hire the circuit upto 5-8 times a year, but full days are hard on car and driver, i can easily run 2 tanks of fuel through the car on full days and often see glowing/smoking brakes and funnily managed to heat my dinner up last year on the square side of the supercharger :o :o :o :o

As a slight departure for my side i will be doing afew Night track days in the summer at donny, just to stretch its legs a-little and get some variation really.... my insurance allows 5 track-days a year, the rest i do at my own risk !!!!

back onto subject im sure their are better press studs available than those from KW and clearly i was lucky to get them free as 67 quid for a full set is LAUGHable and insulting!! BUT... KW are funny bugger and id hate for them to refute a warranty claim for having installed non stock pieces, have a think???? Worryingly after my last all day track session the 2 rear remote canisters started leaking, i removed and sent them off to KW for inspection, luckily all was well and it turns out they'd got alittle Hot, they refilled them and sent them back FOC, but this was normal and they sent a service notice on whats normal and whats not etc..... post lots of pics of the install buddy!!!!

I'll be sure to visit you when I'm back to experience the beast in all its fury! Not to mention picking your brains before I start spending some serious money on forced induction

I haven't seen my Clubsports yet, so I think I'll hold off doing anything about the bolts until I have a better idea of what is required - that KW didn't offer to send suitable bolts for free is poor customer service in my opinion, so I'm loath to pay them if I can find a suitable solution elsewhere (although I hear what you're saying about the warranty).

i dont blame you at all... like you id find every excuse to find something different from elsewhere EVEN if the cost was the same!! But... just trying to make you aware these companies will use any excuse to NOT honour warranty so, just tread carefully as youve just spent 000's on new track dampers and they can be faulty, and the enviornment we run them in is hard on them..... POOR show from kw, especially considering the price of these parts AND the fact that the supplied hardware dosnt allow fitment of the factory S/B..... very poor... 60 quid??? wankers.... why i was sent them free?? i dont know, clearly lots of people have started requesting them and theyve decided to make money on 6 cheap studs....

right onto something you've missed...... with the linear race springs upfront which will help jar your fillings out, you need to add strut top reinforcement plates.... the enforcement plates are made of thick steal that mirror the inner strut top and protect the area, even better they are an o.e piece and its widely recommended on the track tyre setups to fit these, combined with your strutbrace youve added a decent amount of strength to the turret, the smaller surface area of the camber/caster plate could deform the middle of the plate without these fitted....

the simply bolt in place and are order-able from your local bmw dealer :-) please please dont forget them...they are like 15 quid if that!!

everbody that hasnt fitted these dont panic.. more advisable for the stiffer setups with the solid uniball smaller camber/castor plates.

Cheers for that Beedub  I've been doing some research and I think they're a good insurance measure. I've read about thicker ARBs pulling out of the frame (I'll add reinforcement plates when I fit mine), and I know that sticky tyres can cause problems - I've seen a track-prep'ed MG Midget shear hub studs and lose a wheel on a track day through running slicks - but I hadn't considered the increase in force that will be transfered up the line from stiffer suspension that is not congruent with the strut tower.
It's crazy that these are only 9 USD (£5.50) each in the USA but £35 from ebay in the UK. Unfortunately, shipping makes them 75USD (£46) from the States or £40 from ebay. I think I'll send my father into the local BMW stealer to get these for me :)

For other people considering buying these, the part number is 51717036781 - RealOEM lists them only for the E46 3 series, not the Zed.

Part 29:

I'm not sure, but I'll bet it's less than £40 for a pair! I'll post the price once my father's spoken with the local stealer.

I was pretty pleased!
My dad told me that Sopers reduced them from £7.61 each when he mentioned that they are for a Z4, so it would be worth mentioning the forum if anyone else buys parts from there.

Good advice! Where are they fitted exactly…under or above the struts?
