Engine light comes on

Hi,

I have an intermittant misfire (fourth time now) which causes my engine light to come on. Everytime my OBD-instrument tells me misfire in cylinder three, four, five and six (but number one and two are not mentioned in the fault codes).

When the engine light comes on the first time you can hear the misfire. If you then turn off and on the engine the engine light goes out and the misfire is gone. After a while the engine light comes back but this time you can´t hear any misfire. The engine light continue to shine though (and this time it doesn´t help to turn off and on the engine) and my OBD-istrument tells me fault codes "misfire cylinder 3, 4, 5 and 6"everytime. Since the misfire is gone I erase the fault codes and the engine light goes out.

Then after a while the same thing happens (the same pattern repeats itself and cylinder 1 and 2 are not mentioned in the fault codes - only cylinder 3, 4, 5 and 6).


Has anyone experienced this in their can and what can be the problem?

Not had this issue, but when the misfire shows, try removing one spark plug lead at a time and see if one doesn't make any difference to the rough running, you may have a coil pack issue.
 
Coil packs are known to fail. If you are having issues with four it would be worth swapping all six out.

Swap two over with cylinders 1 and 2 to see if the problem moves.
 
Hi had a similar problem last year. I had to have all the coil packs replaced as they were the problem. All replaced and running great

Thankyou for your advices. I´ll begin with switching plugs and coils and se where this will lead me.

(Of course I should have said what car I have. It´s an 2.2 2004 and the mileage is now 75 000 miles.)
 
Hi again guys,

Just want to inform you that I have now replaced all the coil packs (and the spark plugs to) and so far everything seems ok again (in other words - the engine light has not come on any moore).

Hi,

Haven't had any misfireproblems since I changed all the coils last year but yesterday it happened again - misfire which is noticeable and at the same moment the EML comes on. I then turn of the engine and start again and everything is back to normal (no misfire and no EML).
Searched the forum and saw this about cleaning the ICV. Took it out and did just that (the ICV wasn't stuck in any way but I have to say that it operated much easier after cleaning).
I have now testdriven the car and all that has happened so far is that the EML flashed two times in a row at one occasion but has then "kept quiet" (and no misfire has occured).
Do you think I have found the solution?

Hi again,

Saw in another forum (E46 Fanatics) a thread in which a guy had dissolved an ICV and examined it and he came to the conclusion that after cleaning it you shall also lubricate it to receive a more permanent result.
