engine gasping for air at about 3.5/4k RPM?-SORTED-CLEAN THE MAF!

as the title says, this is the sensation felt when i get to those revs. there's a loss of power and the revs climb a bit slower. once the revs pass about 4k, it goes back to normal. i just checked the disa and its fine.

anyone had this issues? i think i read somewhere that it could be an air leak but not sure where specifically to look.

CLEANED THE MAF, THE CAR NEEDED A WEEK OR SO TO WORKOUT HOW TO DEAL WITH THE NEW READING FROM THE SESOR (MY GUESS) ITSELF AND NOW IT WORKS FINE.

It sounds like you're describing a 'flat spot' in engine terms. Very hard to diagnose without lots more information.

It could be bad fuel, old plugs, bad sensor, air leak or a multitude of other things. Did this only start happening recently? Does it occur at part throttle? Can you pull the spark plugs as they can tell you lots about how the engine is running.
 
get it scanned for codes id say, cheap ebay bluetooth dongle and torque app is your cheapest option. :)

recent-ish. probably been a few week now. it occurs at part and full throttle. much more noticeable at full throttle though.

was thinking to maybe clean the maf too-weekend job. will also read for errors.

I don't trust myself to pull sparks out lol. needs an mot soon anyway so will get my guy to look at this and the other things suggested at the same time.
 
Drive it with any cheap obd code reader attached that can read codes and be able to pull up short term and long term fuel trim data.

See if its running rich or lean at the speed affected. This will give you a direction.

first job will be to clean the maf when the maf cleaner turns up in the post. got a service due soon so will get the rest checked then.

It can throw lean codes but can also just cause intermittent issue depending on rip size. Follow piping from air box- the intake boot is the rubber part that meets the engine block- the small pipe that comes off this one is the one that may have ripped.
 
Cleaned maf. Definitely smoother now and less asthmatic around 4K revs but it's still gasping for air.

Had a look for the air leak behind the rubber boot. Can't see a tear but it's hard to see all the way round it.

Going for an MOT soon. Will get matey to look at it
 
Spirited drive today. Only a very slight drop in power around 4K revs now. It's barely noticeable. It's wierd, the first time I drove the car after cleaning the maf. It wasn't as smooth as it is now. Is this possibly because the car is adjusting to the readings from the newly cleaned maf?
 
Most likely, your long term fuel trim will take 3-figure miles to completely adjust. Try removing the battery for 2 minutes to properly reset the ecu.
 
Fixed now. I actually didn't even disconnect and reconnect the battery. It seems to have sorted itself out!
