Anyone know the differences between the -
3.0l m54 engine and the
Alpina engine?

What makes it a 3.3?
Will the intake from the Alpina fit the standard?
 
Haven't seen the link above, but it's the E36 M3 engine, over bored to a 3.4. They could have opted for outright power, but gave it a chunk of extra mid range torque instead :driving:

No correction needed Matt, it's quite different as Alpina take their pick of BMW parts and modify/manufacture others as required - the B3S engine is hand-built, based on the block from the US-spec E36 M3 bored out to 3.4l and mated to a single-vanos head, it uses lightweight pistons made by Mahle and, I believe, different crankshaft/camming. As Adam says the engine is tuned for flexibility rather than outright power but it's still got plenty as Alpina quote the output as a minimum of 300hp and, unlike most manufacturers, Alpina are notoriously conservative with their figures and dyno tests I've seen referred to have shown figures in the 310-320 range
 
So, would something like this fit on the standard engine, and if so, would it make much of a difference

Sorry, can't help you there but, as it looks to involve an ECU change, I doubt very much that it's a simple job and without the right diagnostic equipment it could end up as a major PITA - you might try a PM to 2AlpsAde as he has an engineering background and may be able to offer a sensible answer

From the description it looks like the parts come from a B3 engine rather than the B3S fitted in the RS. The B3S was an evolution of the 3.3l B3 engine. with an increased bore taking it up to 3.4l (3346cc). They also gave it an new intake and exhaust manifold to allow easier breathing and these changes, along with a new EMS, resulted in a bump of 25hp and 27NM over the B3
 
I really doubt that this will be a plug 'n play fit.
For starters I miss a lot of sensors. It might have 'a' wiring loom, but there are more than 1 wiring loom concerning the engine. All with their own connectors, which (partly) wont line up with the m54 sensor connectors. Even between a m54 from an e46 330i (or z3 3.0i) and a z4 3.0i some connectors don't match... It is thàt specific! (MAF is also not the same between the two)

So I don't think this is a conversion kit, but 'just a bunch of alpina parts'

Also I really don't see the point. The 3.0i m54 inlet manifold is already pretty good. The injectors in the ebay auction are of a pretty old type, with less atomisation than modern injectors, and the throttle body (or MAF) doesn't look that big (not bigger than stock).
So I don't think you're going to make more power even if you would be able to get it fitted. Just because it say's 'alpina' it doesn't mean it's better or makes more power.
It also doesnt address the obvious m54 weak spot concerning power......
