Engine cleaning

Ok cleaning gurus .... What's the best way to clean up a manky old engine ready for painting before installation? :D

Does your Z not already have an engine ?

How about soapy water, then some degreaser like Surfex HD, then... Not sure. Can you wet sand metal ? Or do you wire brush it ?

And unless this is a project I've missed, spill the beans :poke:

im going to connect it up to the roof to replace the broken motor! lol :D

its a new (well 67k replacement) for the westy. nothing fancy just a st170 focus engine. im not sure what im going to do with it yet nothing too drastic. ill deffo get a fully mappable VVT controller as my current ecu only does a PWM signal at revs. i was toying with some head work and maybe change the cams for something a bit lairy but keep the vvt.

hopefully it will make ~200bhp. it should. but 240 would be nice if its not going to break the bank... any way fist thing is first clean the crud off, strip it down to a bare engine and paint the block. i can post pics if anyone is interested

i wouldnt wet sand it, a wire brush on a drill or an angle grinder will be fine but ill still need to degrease. prob just go at it with fairy liquid and the hose to start with to get the usual mud/grit off. ive used gunk in the past but wondered if there was a better cleaner out there

As Bing said, Surfex HD is a great degreaser

Another option, if you have or can borrow one, is a steam cleaner

no sanding will be done, just degrease, clean and then a sensible high temp paint. maybe at best some acid etch primer but nothing fancy there are products out there that are designed to do this.

the only one to avoid is hycote high temp red... might be red on the tin lid but come out more like dayglo orange on my camcover :D
