Hi Guys ,
To old and unfit to grovel under cars anymore , so wondering if i buy the oils, what do you reckon is a reasonable price for my local village garage to charge me to change engine, gearbox, and filter... ?
cheers Dave.

If I had a lift it would be a 30 min job - might as well do the diff too. Hell, I can do it on stands in an hour so I'd not be willing to pay more than £30.

Make sure you get new plugs all round.

Thanks Scooba_Steve,
Just needed a rough idea, as no clue really of how long it would take them..
What do you mean by "plugs", ? :?
thanks Dave.

Plugs - sump plug, gearbox plugs and diff plug if you do the diff too. They are a one use only item and not too expensive to replace so worth it.

No real need for new plugs. Changed my engine oil x5 since owning and the gearbox and diff oil a few months ago. No leaks or issues of any kind.
As an aside a well worth doing as made box and axle so much smoother.

While you don't need new plugs (I don't always change the sump) for the cost it's worth doing on the box and diff. I only did so as they have integrated seals and I take the belt and braces approach. Huge difference to the box changing the oil.

As for disposal my local tip takes oil for free - £70 might be around the going rate but I think it takes the biscuit a bit - even if the car is on the ramp for an hour there's only 20 minutes worth of actual work.

looking to get this done as well
i'm guessing the 70 is labour only or is that including the oil for the diff/gear box

morning all,
Thank you for all your input on what must seem a simple mundane job, but for some of us, for one reason or another, just cannot do.
Thanks also for the suggestions to get the diff done, as i never even gave that a thought .. :!:
will be doing all plugs in case of any leakage problems, as for spark plugs, think i can save a few bob their , as she runs as sweet as a nut, ( as the saying goes ) never missed a beat, starts 1st time, and you would think the rev counter was glued in place at tick over, she's so smooth... :D
thanks again guys, Dave..

If it's labour only I'd not pay it. With oil not so bad.

well unless there is anyone on here who could help me out, ( agreed price of course , and i'll get all the bits etc ) then i will have to find a trust worthy garage, ha ha, (well a man can dream) thanks again, i'm off shopping for the bits now........
Dave

My local BMW specialist (not dealer) charges £50 an hour and charged me 2 hours labour for doing an insepection 2 service including changing engine, gearbox and diff oils, all filters and spark plugs.
The diff is the hardest to change as there is no drain plug only a fill so you need to suck out the old oil.

I got the plugs from Soper BMW in Lincoln the part numbers and prices they charged me are below, make sure to mention the forum to get a bit of discount.

23117531356 – Gearbox plugs (Need 2 @ £5.45 each)
33117525064 – Differential plugs (Need 1 @ £4.91 each)

Hi,
Took her for the dreaded mot this afternoon and she flew through it, no adviseries , on anything, chap even commented on how clean it was underneath, :D
On the oil side of thins from earlier , i know i can use 0-30 and 5-30 for the motor , but what viscosity etc for gearbox , and for diff, and should they be fully synthetic , if there is such stuff.. ?
I have had a quick look about , but just got more confused .. again, Thanks.
Dave.

Some diffs do have 2 drain plugs. Mine does.

You simply take off the diff cover. Drain it check for metallic debris. Clean, reseal and refill. Pump out is a poor substitute for an oil change.

Have you done this? it didnt look that easy to get the cover off. Also i figured that a pump out change was better than the BMW recommendation of just never doing it.
