Engine and exhaust noise

Happy Tuesday all! :driving:

I was wondering if anyone else with a E89 20i has experienced this...

Last night, I started the car up and the engine made a very odd noise, it stopped when idling but started as soon as I touched the throttle, it disappeared completely when it had warmed up. It was a strange metallic sort of noise, definitely not normal and it has never done it before! I should mention the car had been sat for a week whilst I was away, but that isn't out of the ordinary for this car anyway...

Onto this morning, the exhaust on a cold start is fantastic, but today it was much louder than normal! I even got some huge cracks coming out of it, no joke, it sounded as loud as a shotgun and much louder than the bangs I used to get from the old Cooper S!

Should I be worried and take it down the stealers for a check up! It hasn't had its first service yet!

Thanks

Hi Mikey,

Mine tends to make a kind of metallic resonating sound on cold starts and you can hear it with the window down for a few minutes then it goes. Hard sound to describe but its like something is loose inside the exhaust and seems to be coming from the front section. There is a flap inside the inboard exhaust tail pipe so it could be this thats rattling, anyways its sounds a bit rubbish until the car is warmed up. I don't get any loud bangs or cracks though so maybe get yours checked out as any unburnt fuel igniteing in the exhaust won't do the cat any good long term.

Will mention my noises to the dealer come service time next March.

Have you had your roof wrapped? I noticed you have a black roof on a pre LCI Zed :)

Tim.

Thanks for the reply!

I've got it booked in now, the RFT light came on at the same time as the DSC/DTC light. Apparently this means the suspension management, DSC/DCT and tyre pressure monitors have all failed! :o

My 20i has an occasional loud start up. It revs to just under 2000 RPM and immediately goes down, kinda annoying for my neighbours. Did you get to the bottom of this?
