End of dipstick has come off

Have just checked the oil on the car ,when i pulled the dipstick out the red coloured end has come off in either the tube or further down.
Any advice on driving the car etc?.Do you think this will be covered under used approved warranty?.
 
Certainly don't drive that! You do not want that plastic to be munched by the engine.

No idea with regards to the warranty element though, never heard of this one before.
 
I feel for you mate my e46 had a very tight dipstick(not me!) :) -i dreaded pulling it out in case the same thing happened-let us know what you do
 
i have never ever heard of one of these failing like this but i suppose it happens, i always make a point of pulling it directly upwards, beause i suppose its an easy part to break.
 
Just gave BMW assist a wee phone.The lady spoke to a technician who said the car was safe to drive,but to take it to the dealers at the first available time.
Will take it on Tuesday and see what kind of pish story they try and fob me off with.Dont think i will use the car though,will only drive it to the dealers which is only 6 miles away.
On my previous z4 i found that the dipstick was quite a tight fit and also on this car,but dont really excpect the end to come off!.I can just hear the conversation,yes sir that is not covered under warranty here is your bill for £200.
 
Important thing is that you've logged the issue with BMW Assist, just in case any damage is caused by you driving it.

Let us know how you get on. Surely draining the oil will be enough to get the broken bit out, as long as it doesn't get crunched into pieces? :?
 
The lady from BMW assist said that the end of the dipstick wouldnt be able to get near any parts of the engine due to a mesh/baffle.
Dont really know the ins and outs of the M engine but the problem has been logged and i made sure that the car was ok to be driven.
As i have said before i am waiting on the dealers trying to charge me for the repair but i will obviously be trying to avoid any cost to myself.
I will let you know the outcome on Tuesday.
 
It should be ok mate, I believe there is something to stop it dropping into the engine, as with most cars.

In terms if getting it out, they have a machine...which they strap the car in to and turn it upside down, it then shakes the object out. The other benefit is that occasionally you find lose change falls out from those ares in the car that the vacuum can't reach.

Yes i am sure i have heard of this machine that you talk about but for the life of me i cant remember what it is called :P :P :P :P :P :wink: :wink: :rofl: .
 
Car now fixed.They managed to fish out the end of the dipstick.
They did as i suspected try to charge me for this repair but i told them that i was not prepared to accept this and wanted to speak to someone ie
service manager or dealer principal and miracuously they decided that the repair would be covered.I am glad that it is repaired but also dissapointed by the initial response from the dealer
but hey ho got the problem sorted for nowt with a bit of complaining.
 
Glad you got it fixed without too many hassles. Doesn't surprise that they wanted to charge, but good on you for standing your ground. :thumbsup:

Out of interest, did you use one of the main Glasgow dealers - DP or HF ?
