Emissions help needed

So my car failed it's MOT yesterday on emissions. Everything else was ok a few advisorys both front rubber brake lines showing wear so that will be fixed with braided lines and slight movement in the top of the offside front strut. I am not bothered by these simple fixes.

My issue is the failing on the emissions it passed on co (0.2) passed on hc (200) but failed on the lambda 1.44

I have a small leak in the exhaust at a joint witch could be causing the issue. Simple fix but I have noticed my mpg reducing and I am sure it is running rich. Could be a sensor???

Is there anyone local to me and has a good knowledge of the system willing to come and have a loon with a coder?? I have a generic one but I am guessing more information is available with the BMW ones? Also I have no warning lights and have had none recently.
 
Hi, I would fix the exhaust leak & go from there-have you got the torque app? I think that shows lambda values.

I agree it could show the fishy readings! But I can't see how it would effect the mpg? So I am guessing another issue is there also?

What's the torque app? Off to google now.
 
Bits and apps have been brought. I have made time for car work on Sunday looks like I will fix my exhaust and clutch in too.
 
I'm using Carly and wifi obd dongle.
It does live parameters including lamda i think although i havent used it for that yet. Only used ot for diagnostics and a bit of coding.

Sorry to hear car failed on emissions. I always start on the simplist first so what about air filter -I always renew mine before the MOT. They are often not replaced at service and it is surprising how they can clog up. Also when was oil last changed. Remove the oil filler cap and have a look inside - that will give a very basic check on engine condition - you do not want mayo froth inside there, other than a bit of condensation.
Next do you use supermarket petrol. If so invest in decent premuim stuff and give car a good drive before next test.
If all this fails you are looking at cleaning out the emissions system.
Incidentally is it a very high mileage car or possibly only used a weekens.

Hi mike, a dirty air filter won't cause this issue-the lambda will detect the lower air flow via the exhaust gas composition & the ecu analyses the reading and adjusts the fuelling to compensate, giving the correct stoichometric level :thumbsup:

Matt, when I got my MR2, the exhaust was blowing. It had failed the MOT on emissions, the garage owner said the car had never had an issue before the exhaust blow. Once I had fixed that, the car went straight through the MOT :thumbsup:

Hi Mike
The oil is 3k miles old engine wise I don't have any doubts. The car had done 75k the air filter is a cone filter and has just been cleaned. My car gets oil and service every year by me. The guys at the garage said that it could be down to it being a weekend use car. But they did all they could (let me take it out for an Italian tune up to get her warm and cleans out) before running the test again.

I have an app and a dongle thing on there way. I have also been over and got our generic coad reader to plug in tomorrow. I am guessing the exhaust is an issue the main one! I will be looking st that and fitting my new clutch Sunday. I will also whiz the o2 sensors out and clean them up. Or buy new ones depending on what codes say!!
