Emergency roof closing when stuck

Last few days i have been fiddling to fix a broken wire on the roof.

One thing i found very useful was a mod to release the boot lid.
I did post the mod, but received some bad replies to it so i removed the post.
But the mod had been a godsend the last few days.

But something that Euro cars are missing which would have helped was the manual boot release in the boot, you know the anti kidnap handle.
If the roof gets stuck half way, with roof protector down, it's impossible to get at the pump to dump hydraulic pressure.
If the boot release handle is pulled it should unlock the boot lid, which can then be raised and access gained to the pump hydraulics.
It's possible to lift the protector, empty boot of junk, lift floor and access the pump.
The boot needs propping up first with old broom handle or two people.
You can then dump the hyd. pressure for the roof, the fwd brass hex. turn anti clockwise, i let it settle in boot. Then i manually lifted up and over back over the cabin.
For the boot, the rear brass hex. turned anti clockwise, broom handles removed, better two man job and boot lowered.

In my case at least i am now in a position to rework my roof wiring.
But if long way from home at least could get it somewhere near closed.

The moderators here seem to have some very weird ideas of when to leap in...could you re-post without whatever caused the Stazi to barf pls?

Why on earth would posting about a manual boot release cause an issue for some members?!

I for one was glad the e85 had an manual roof release once in the lakes when I had a wiring fault in the roofs loom. It's the one thing that really bothers me about e89 ownership, the lack of the same.

Could you post the info about the boot release mod again? I am pretty sure those you had a problem with are no longer here?

Check out this link, sixth post down. I think this is the mod in question. I can see why some members would have taken issue with it. But that said if you don't do it your car isn't at risk, so the info being in the public domain isn't an issue for me and even if you do, any thief would really have to know it's there.

I removed the rubber stop 1.
Drilled hole in mounting 3.
Fed plastic tube then piece of electrical wire 4 5 6 and 7.
Then from under badge i can pull and unlock boot, good if roof gets stuck half way and then have access to the boot and pump.
If the car is locked and alarmed, alarm goes off if boot is opened.

Don't know what i would have done this last weekend without it.
If the car had the US escape handle, could have used that, but not if failed with boot closed.

Thanks for posting again. I take it you've never had any issues with water ingress through the tube etc? Do you have a pic of the finished article under the badge that you could post?

Just a small knot in the wire.
No water problems.
If it was black wire would look like the original bump stop.

Hi Guys - interesting thread. I have often wondered what would happen if roof stuck when raining..
Is there a manual operation to close the roof once you can get into the boot?

Cheers,
Steve

No, but you can get somewhere near closed if you go back to my first comment, but that is more of a repair access procedure rather than a fully close option.
I always carry a car cover behind drivers seat.

Great idea. Which one? You know, I am always slightly on tenterhooks when I do a roof open/close when a long way from home due to a lack of a manual open/close capability if the electrical mechanism fails. Makes AA/RAC/GF membership mandatory since just imagine roof stuck half open when 100 miles away and the clouds are gathering.....
