Electric Power Steering

Greetings to all.
I’ve always wanted to ask if fellow Z4 owners experienced any noise from their Electric Power Steering column. When the vehicle is stationary, fast short-turning of the steering left & right produces a faint “tug” sound with a light feel of free space. When the vehicle runs over uneven/rough roads, the Steering Column produces faint “rattling” sound (like something is loose). Is it just my 04’ Z4 2.5i or a common problem?

Welcome to the forum.
What you notice at ''stationary'' it happens to all electric power steerings. I have noticed it also to my MINI COOPER.
For the rough roads, I have not noticed anything. Maybe because at rough roads I drive very-very slow.

fugowitz, welcome to the forum....
I have not notice what you described with the electric steering... :idunno:
Be sure to got over to the "Newbie" section and introduce yourself and post up a picture of your Zed... :camera:

could this be the famous sticky steering i have heard about...mine had a steering column change apparently it was fixed in 06 cars onwards

Yes I did, I recently linked my experiences in another thread...lemme see if I can do it again..or, you can do a search on steering problems and probably find it. I suck at computer stuff

Thanks for the feedback & warm welcome. You’re all so nice. Well, my steering issue isn’t with “notching” or side-pulling feel. My daily ride has a hydraulic power steering system. Hence, maybe I’m more sensitive to the different feel (& faint noise) with the Z4 electric power steering. Or maybe, my Z4’s power steering indeed has gremlin (which I’ve not noticed before until recently). Konas’ BMW made MINI also has similar steering free space feel if you turn the steering left & right in rapid short-stroke when the vehicle is stationary.(Any of the Z4 owners’ experience this?). When running over rough/ bumpy roads (at reasonable speed), the feel of steering vibration (& faint rattle noise) is more prominent than my other hydraulic power steering car. (That can’t be the positive attribute of better road feel, can it?). I just read from an available Z4 technical manual that says “the EPS system acoustics can be heard in particular situation...... This acoustic pattern is not a system fault”. There lies the dilemma, what’s acceptable acoustic pattern and what’s faulty?

not this is it mate ?

I had this on my '03 2.5 Z4 - I had a noticable knock when turning the steering slowly - mostly when parking

everytime BMW had it they could not find anything wrong - then one day I found how to repeat it..

I sent the link above to the service adviser who promptly had my car collected and the EPS steering replaced under warranty

result :D

Not that kind-of "acoustic pattern", mitch. But thanks for sharing. You're fortunate to have the entire steering column changed under warranty. Mine's way out warranty. :(
Then again, BMW might say..."hey, that acoustic is normal."
