ECU Updates

So, I had a couple of issues with my Zed a few weeks ago and I called in the AA as I have Homestart and when he checked the car for error codes, he said there were multiple errors, o2 sensor/misfire/lean mixture...etc and that the errors hadn’t been cleared in the lifetime of the car so it was impossible to tell exactly what was wrong without clearing the codes and then driving the car to see what came up.

He also mentioned that the cars like these need to have the latest ECU updates from BMW. I don’t know too much about ECU mapping (i know there’s a few guys on here that do).

He went on to say that Independent garages rarely get the latest updates as BMW don’t release them to anyone else, and that the updates themselves are worth going to BMW for servicing. TBH this has made me think twice about going to an indi now. My car has only been to Birds in Iver for servicing who are very well known for being M specialists.

Was the AA guy telling porkies or is there an element of truth in what he said?

Birds have a very good reputation so I wouldn't worry about taking it there.

Not sure about the ECU updates. Can you not take your car to a main dealer for its next MOT and ask them to see if there are any outstanding updates while its in.
