ECU re-map - which map is best?

Hi there,
I am considering getting my 03 Z4 3.0 auto re-mapped, but there seem to be a lot of different maps out there (at varying prices). I was just wandering if anyone had any recommendations on where to go for the best re-map?
Many thanks

If you havn't done many modifications to the car I would recommend a generic remap from ESS. If you've done more than an exhaust and intake then you may need a "live" remap tailored specifically for your car. This can be expensive!

Curtis,

What could one expect from a remap on the 3.0i auto (same car as mine)

Increased HP and torque by moving out parameters (meaningful or just paper figures)

Fuel consumption logic says worse but if done right probably equal or better

Relaibility the same as they won't do anything too radical

Would thay change the auto to match the engine? Shift points, etc.

Anything else?

The best remaps will smooth out the power curve while adding a bit more power and torque across the range. It's not peak horsepower that's important ( most claims are bulls**t anyway ) it's how the engine performs and reacts at any stage in the rev range.

Most OEM BMW maps have two built in flatspots at points in the rev range, it's something to do with emmision checks but I can't remember the details, anyway, these get removed. So does the top speed limiter. ESS do a diffrent MAP for the auto but I don't know what exactly it takes into account such as shift points etc.

If done properly you shouldn't loose any MPG. This tends to happen when amateur remappers think that simply pumping in more fuel will give more power.

Reliability won't be an issue at all. A customer of mine has a 440 H/P supercharger kit on his 330. The engine has no modifications other than the S/C and gets serviced as per the original schedule. It has done 47k since the S/C was fitted with no problems other than a burst vacuum pipe!

OK - a couple of points in there I was not aware of the flatspots and removing the limiter (probably sounds better than real world use..lol)

can the ESS generic remap be done here in AUS? like anyway of getting it here?

the last i checked, ESS does not provide remote mapping for the Siemens MS45.0 ECU in the Z4. only the M43 and earlier versions can be remotely mapped. you're gonna need to send your ecu to them... either their norway or their US facility provides this service i think.

there's a tuner here in singapore i use to tune my car. he's also the local Motec agent so i think he flies occasionally to AUS as well. if you want, i can give you his contact and you can hook up with him and get him to reflash your ecu when he's in town. his rates are pretty reasonable but you'll have to find out exact pricing from him for a reflash as mine was a custom dyno/road tune.
