I had the eccentric shaft sensor fail on my e86. The car was over fueling and making a booming raspy sound which, initially I thought was the new sound of the exhaust. I had the resonator deleted and the fault of the eccentric shaft occurred at the same time. Coincidence!
With the fault I was typically seeing 265/75 miles to a tank mostly cruising at 70mph on the motorway with the odd trip around town. Driving silly, 240 miles a tank.
Since replacing the ESS I have since a vast improvement and I'm achieving 300/310 miles to a tank. Driving silly, 280miles to a tank.
I didn't buy the coupe wanting a decent return on mpg I wanted the smiles per gallon.
I replaced the ESS myself, I was able to get a Siemens sensor from which I have read is the same as BMW and cost £69.99. Approx. 4 hours to do.
Thought I'd share for those who are experiencing a poor mpg and wanting to squeeze a bit more out of a tank. Might be worth a change.
