Early Z roadies / how low can they go ?

I always wanted a 911, but when I bought my first Z4 new in 2004, it was about half the price of a 911 and I just do not dare to buy second hand for a treasured car as I need to know what has happened to it and Porsche second hand scared the hell out of me. Most second hand cars I have had, I lost some enjoyment when I would find something that I did not like, like accident repair damage or so or difficult to replace leather wear.
So my path was a predictable one in the end - just needed the permission of Mrs PVR.

I think the Z4 has got to be one of the best looking cars for the money and also power/cost value.
This is often proven when people move on from Z4's and dont know where to go next without a huge iincrease in cash.
Thats what makes the car featured at the start of this thread so suprisingly cheap.

Early Z4's are at the usual sports/convertible crossroads where exceptional examples stabilise and may gently appreciate over the years, but average and poor examples rapidly deteriorate as maintenance costs spiral. I'de call it the perfect time to find a nice example and keep it right but maybe not an ultra cheapie :|

The dealership is less than a mile from where I live so couldn't really pass up the chance.
It really is a great little car - never know that it has done 114,000 miles. Only problems with it are a cracked foglight, a scuff on the front spoiler and a scratch on the driver's door where some swine has keyed it - although this has been touched up. I'll get that and the scuff repaired professionally and replace the foglight myself. No sign of a roof motor replacement but it works perfectly so I'm wondering if the drains have been cleared on a regular basis. The driver's seat isn't actually that badly worn.
It has a full BMW service history, although I'll be using Munich Legends who looked after my E39 M5 - which I traded in for this. Bit of a power downgrade I know but the nimble handling of the Z4 more than makes up for it. The M5 was just costing too much to run and I think a rear suspension refurb will soon be required.
Only time I've ever driven away a new car and been given a wad of cash as well!

You only have to look how Boxster values have fallen over the years to see where Z4 values are likely to head. Condition and spec will be the key factors in a few years (if we aren't there already) rather than age. 987 and 986 Boxsters are starting to overlap in value as engine, spec and condition are taking precedent. I believe the same is starting to happen with non M E85's and E89's. Have to say though my 10 year old 5K Z4 is easily 90% as good/fun my brand new 50k+ 987 was back in 2009. Bag for buck there not much out there for 5K and below that gives you the thrills of a preface lift 3.0 Z4. Especially if your quite tall/big like me and then MX5's and S2000's are just too small to get comfortable in. Plus they don't look/feel as fresh or have the air of quality a E85, hell its leaps and bounds above a 986 Boxster for similar money on that score!
