E89 Voice control without Nav

To my surprise we found out that we have voice control for bluetooth for our new E89. It's not the full voice control for all functions you get with the idrive, but it lets you dial numbers or names by voice commands.

Strangely however it doesn't work from your phone directory, you have to set up names and numbers directly into the car and it can store up to 50 entries.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but we didn't expect it as voice control shows in the brochure as only available with the Nav, even BMW told us the voice button doesn't do anything during the handover. I presume this is something that now comes as standard with Bluetooth?

I think this has been standard for ages, if not from the start. You must record your entries into it as you say, which is probably why hardly anyone uses it! Think of it more as it records what you say, compares it, and dials the number you put against it. Not really voice control as such. True voice control over the entire car is iDrive only.
